MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The learning curve for Temple quarterback Chester Stewart just got a little steeper.
The redshirt freshman, making his third start for the Owls, threw three interceptions as Temple lost to Central Michigan, 24-14, yesterday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. He had 163 yards through the air on 15-of-32 passing
"Those three interceptions were killers, because we gave Central Michigan a short field," Temple coach Al Golden said. "Overall, Chester was doing well, and then he panicked a couple of times and made some throws out there that I think he would like back. I think it is evident that he is talented when he settles down."
Temple (2-5, 1-3 Mid-American Conference) fell behind by 14-0 in the first half, as Chippewas quarterback Dan LeFevour threw two touchdown passes to Antonio Brown. The first came with 2 minutes, 51 seconds to play in the first quarter - the first points the Owls had allowed in the first quarter this season.
Brown's second TD came on the first play of the second quarter from 14 yards out.
Temple scored about two minutes later on a 17-yard run by Kee-ayre Griffin, who was playing just his second game on offense.
"He is talented and I like the way he is running, and we need to keep finding ways to get him the ball," Golden said.
Jake Brownwell's extra-point attempt hit off the right upright, which left the score at 14-6. Brownwell also came up short on a 45-yard field-goal attempt later in the game.
"We need our guys to step up and start making some kicks," Golden said.
Stewart threw his lone touchdown with 4:58 to play in the first half when he connected with Bruce Francis on a 3-yard pass. Stewart hit Steve Maneri for the two-point conversion. Central Michigan (4-2, 3-0) held a 17-14 lead at halftime thanks to a 22-yard field goal.
Stewart threw his third interception to set up the Chippewas' final touchdown. Bobby Seay got the pick at the Owls' 37-yard line early in the fourth quarter.
On the next play, backup quarterback Brian Brunner, who filled in for LeFevour in the second half after LeFevour injured his right ankle, threw a 37-yard TD pass.
"Penalties and mistakes killed us," Golden said.
Francis' touchdown catch was the 16th of his Temple career and put him in a tie for second all-time with Willie Marshall (1983-86). Francis also extended his school record for consecutive games with a reception to 33.
Junior Galette tied a career high in sacks with three.
Senior quarterback Adam DiMichele dressed for the game and threw short passes beforehand, a sign that his injured shoulder is improving.
