Penn beats Georgetown in football

WASHINGTON - Chris Wynn returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, freshman Matt Hamscher ran for 102 yards and a score in his Penn debut, and the Quakers defeated Georgetown, 27-7, yesterday in their first game at Multi-Sport Field.

Andrew Samson kicked two field goals and Luke DeLuca rushed for a touchdown for Penn (2-2), which won its second consecutive game. The Quakers improved to 5-0-1 all-time against Georgetown (1-4).

The Hoyas, whose Oct. 4 game at Colgate was canceled because of an outbreak of norovirus on the Georgetown campus, dropped their fourth straight. Georgetown fell to 2-19-1 all-time against Ivy League opponents.

Wynn exploded through a seam at the Penn 40-yard line and sprinted 88 yards for a touchdown on the opening kickoff. It was the second kickoff-return TD of his career, but the Quakers' first since Tyler Fisher went 96 yards against Columbia on Oct. 13 of last season.

Samson kicked a 36-yard field goal, helping Penn take a 10-0 lead after the opening quarter.

A 2-yard sweep left by Hamscher completed a 15-play, 84-yard march that consumed 7 minutes, 54 seconds, putting the Quakers ahead by 17-0 with 12:28 remaining in the first half.

Georgetown drove to the Penn 5-yard line on the ensuing series, but Keerome Lawrence mishandled a shotgun snap on first and goal, and Quakers linebacker Jake Lewko recovered the fumble.

Samson nailed a 37-yard field goal and Tony Moses' interception set up a 2-yard plunge by DeLuca with 35 seconds remaining in the quarter.

The Hoyas averted a shutout on Collin Meador's 1-yard touchdown reception with 6:03 remaining in the game.

Senior tight end Josh Koontz had a career-high seven catches and 69 yards for Penn, and senior quarterback Robert Irvin was 11-of-20 passing for 149 yards.

On defense, senior linebacker Jay Colabella had a career-high 10 tackles, including a tackle for a loss and a pass breakup. Senior defensive back Britton Ertman was second on the team with seven tackles.

For Penn coach Al Bagnoli, the win was the 196th of his career.
