National:
Sam Swank, the nation's active career leader with 65 field goals, kicked a 41-yarder with 3 seconds left to give Wake Forest a 30-28 win over visiting Mississippi.
Local:
Mike Washington had five catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half, as West Chester beat Lock Haven, 37-6.
AROUND TOWN
UConn 12, Temple 9 (OT):
In a steady soaking at the Linc, the Owls (1-1) nearly got the jusTice they had been seeking since last September's controversial loss at Connecticut (2-0).
Instead it turned into Bad Beat, the sequel.
Trying to go 2-0 for the first time since 1981, the Owls got possession first in the extra period. Travis Shelton took an Adam DiMichele pass and ran it inside the Huskies' 5, but a late holding call moved the ball back to the 19, where it should have been first-and-4.
Instead, the chain crew marked it as first-and-10, a mistake that was corrected after an incompletion. On the next play Temple got a first down anyway, at the 12, via a UConn personal foul. The Owls got to the 4 before settling for Jake Brownell's third field goal.
The Huskies then gave it to Donald Brown (36 carries, 214 yards) three times. He gained 10, 8, and the final 7.
The Owls are now 0-5 in OT, all since 2003. This was the third time it's happened at home.
Twelve months ago, the Owls lost at UConn when a late TD was missed by both the officials on the field and in the replay booth. This time, the OT foul-up (by a Big East officiating crew) left Temple coach Al Golden shaking his head.
"They apologized afterward," he said. "There's no conspiracy. All I'm saying is, that was a bad deal. There's 112 guys I have to explain that to . . . It's unfortunate. What are you going to do?"
There also is the other reality.
"We had the [defending] Big East champs on the ropes," Golden said. "We didn't make enough plays to win."
UConn - which lost a fumble at the Temple goal line in the first period - missed three field goals, including one after it held on a fourth-and-1 at the Owls' 34 with just over 4 minutes remaining.
"It would have been easy to punt [in that situation]," Golden insisted. "That's the conventional wisdom. We're trying to stop 30 years of this crap. There'll be a day when we can make that yard. If we can, we really have a chance to do something . . .
"We've got to do this for 4 months. What's there to get down about?"
