The two-way standout from North Catholic, a high-profile recruit by Al Golden, chose to leave Temple after just one season.
"Basically, I didn't want to be in Philadelphia anymore," Robinson, who said he made his decision in late June, explained over the phone last night. "And things just weren't clicking with [Golden]. Just simple things, I don't know. I didn't like his approach, how he came at me, stuff like that.
"I've been in Philly all my life. I just wanted to experience something new. I think I needed a change. It was time."
A Temple spokesperson said Golden couldn't comment, because "technically [Robinson] is still enrolled in classes [for the fall semester]." Robinson said he wasn't aware of that.
His cousin, Malik Ballard, a basketball player who graduated from Frankford, also just arrived at West Hills. It was a factor in Robinson's choice of schools.
Last season, Robinson played on offense (running back, wide receiver) and special teams (kick returner) and accounted for more than 600 yards. He'd been moved to defense in the offseason, and Robinson said he was "running" on the first team at right cornerback.
"I've [already] had a lot of calls the last couple of weeks from [other] Division I programs," he said. "I'm looking at schools back East. I don't want to be too far from my mom."
He also said he took a 2.7 grade-point average with him to the opposite coast.
"It was just something in my heart that I felt I had to do," Robinson said. "I started thinking about leaving back in January. But I stuck with it. It's hard to leave, but I don't have any hard feelings towards anyone. I talked to [Golden]. He was real frustrated about [the situation]."
The Owls, who have virtually everyone else back from a team that finished 4-8, will hold their annual media day this afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field. They open the season next Friday night at Army. *
