Temple men's coach Fran Dunphy - who won 10 Ivy titles in 17 seasons at Penn before moving over to North Broad Street two years ago following John Chaney's retirement - has been given a 2-year contract extension, the school announced today. This means he'll remain in charge of the program at least through 2013-14.
"We could not have a better person, nor a better coach, at the helm," said athletic director Bill Bradshaw, who recently received a new 5-year deal. "We knew when we hired Fran Dunphy that he was the right man to lead Temple basketball."
The Owls finished 21-13 last season, making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001, and Dunphy was named the Eastern College Coach of the Year.
It was also announced that Temple will play in the inaugural eight-team Charleston (S.C.) Classic, an ESPN creation, from Nov. 14 to 16 at the new 5,000-seat Carolina First Center on the campus of the College of Charleston.
The other teams in the field are Clemson, which also made last season's NCAA Tourney, East Tennessee State, Western Michigan, Hofstra, Texas Christian, Western Michigan and one team yet to be determined.
