Germantown Academy's Carey picks Villanova

After touring colleges up and down the East Coast, Germantown Academy's Jesse Carey has decided to stay local.

Carey, a 5-foot-10 point guard who will be a senior in the fall, has orally committed to play basketball at Villanova.

She also had considered and visited Virginia, Syracuse, St. Joseph's and Richmond.

"The recruiting process was tough, took up a lot of time," she said. "I'm glad it's over. I wanted to make a decision before July, and I was able to do that."

For Germantown Academy, which last season went 22-8 and won its 10th straight Inter-Academic League championship, Carey averaged 10.7 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals per game. She was a third-team all-Southeastern Pennsylvania selection by The Inquirer.

Notre Dame Academy point guard Devon Kane, another Inter-Ac senior-to-be, committed to Villanova last week.

Ryan chooses Rutgers. Eastern quarterback/cornerback Logan Ryan is the latest South Jersey football standout to make an oral commitment to attend Rutgers. The 5-11, 176-pound Ryan made the commitment yesterday.

He became the third South Jersey player in a week to commit to Rutgers, joining Penns Grove running back/defensive back Aaron Hayward and Paulsboro quarterback/safety Gerald Hodges.

Ryan is considered one of the top cornerback prospects in New Jersey. He had 40 tackles in addition to rushing for 592 yards and 13 touchdowns and passing for 899 yards and five touchdowns.

"Rutgers is the hometown school, and I felt I developed the best relationship with Rutgers," Ryan said.

Ryan said he chose Rutgers over Virginia.

Wallace to Virginia. Moorestown offensive tackle Robert "Cody" Wallace made an oral commitment over the weekend to attend the University of Virginia, Moorestown coach Russ Horton said. The 6-5, 260-pound Wallace became the second South Jersey player to commit to Virginia, joining Camden receiver Charles Watkins, who gave a commitment last week.
