Penn St. lands top recruit for offensive line

After a slow start, Penn State has bounced back in its recruiting efforts for the Class of 2009.

Yesterday, the Nittany Lions landed one of the top offensive-line prospects in the nation, plus another lineman, giving them eight oral commitments thus far. Five of the pledges have come in the last week.

Eric Shrive, a 6-foot-7, 300-pound senior-to-be from West Scranton, Pa., told the Web site rivals.com that he chose Penn State over Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan. The five-star recruit had at least 15 scholarship offers.

Frank Figueroa, a 6-4, 282-pound guard from Alexandria, Va., committed yesterday morning, according to Blue and White Illustrated.

Shrive and Figueroa join Ty Howle of Bunn, N.C., and St. Joseph's Prep's Mark Arcidiacono as commitments on the offensive line. The Lions' four other recruits are defensive backs Darrell Givens, Derrick Thomas, Stephen Obeng-Agyapong and Malcolm Willis.

Givens, a 5-11, 175-pound cornerback from Indian Head, Md., backed out of a commitment to Ohio State on Saturday.

Recruits are not permitted to sign binding letters of intent until February.

DeLuca: Everybody's got a summer playlist. The 21 picks I've assembled here may worm their way into your consciousness, if they haven't made it there already.
TOP STORIES
Dick Polman: Let's try to guess whom John McCain picks as his running mate. It's fun to speculate - even though, if history is any guide, we'll probably all be wrong.

Still, we can learn a lot about McCain's candidacy, and the daunting challenges that he faces, simply by playing the veepstakes.

For starters, we probably should excise the candidates McCain reportedly covets the most. Tom Ridge, for instance. McCain really likes the guy, by all accounts.
Politics
With four months left until Election Day, the electoral map is tilted in Barack Obama's favor, giving him more paths to win the presidency than John McCain.

College business schools are taking a hard look at how they teach ethics, looking for ways to help graduates think and prevent future scandals and half-baked business experiments that backfire.
