Charlotte knocks off Clemson

Leemire Goldwire scored 21 points to lead visiting Charlotte to an 82-72 victory over No. 18 Clemson last night, the 49ers' first win over a ranked team in nearly 3 years.

Charlotte (9-5) lost all of a 12-point lead in the second half, but outscored the Tigers, 13-3, over the final 4:23. The 49ers hadn't beaten a Top 25 team since defeating No. 18 Cincinnati, 91-90, on Feb. 5, 2005.

Trevor Booker led Clemson (12-3) with 32 points.

* At Tennessee, Tyler Smith (21 points) hit a layup with 4.2 seconds to play and the No. 8 Volunteers (13-1, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) handed No. 16 Mississippi its first loss of the season, 85-83. Chris Warren led the Rebels (13-1,0-1) with 24 points.

* At North Carolina, Tyler Hansbrough scored 23 points to lead the top-ranked Tar Heels (16-0) past North Carolina-Asheville, 93-81.

* At Dayton, Brian Roberts scored 23 points and the No. 17 Flyers (13-1, 1-0 Atlantic 10) held off No. 22 Rhode Island, 92-83. Jimmy Baron had 26 points for the Rams (14-2, 0-1).

* At Memphis, Derrick Rose scored 19 points and the No. 2 Tigers (14-0, 1-0 Conference USA) drubbed East Carolina, 99-58.

* At Vanderbilt, freshman A.J. Ogilvy scored 25 points and the No. 13 Commodores (16-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) defeated South Carolina, 80-73.

* At South Florida, Sam Young's 22 points led No. 20 Pittsburgh (13-2, 1-1 Big East) over the Bulls, 79-66.

* At Xavier, B.J. Raymond and C.J. Anderson each scored 21 points, and the No. 24 Musketeers (13-3, 1-0 Atlantic 10) defeated St. Bonaventure, 83-68. *
