Former Boston University basketball standout Jake O’Brien is transferring to Temple.

The 6-foot-9 forward has one year of eligibility remaining and will be able to play right away. He will be a graduate student at Temple this fall. He chose the Owls over Boston College, Providence and Virginia.

"I chose Temple because of the success of the program and a chance for me to come in right away to contribute and compete for [an opportunity to reach] the NCAA tournament."

O’Brien decided to transfer last month because BU was banned from postseason play in the America East Conference after announcing a move to the Patriot League for the 2013-14 season. Without participating in the American East tourney, the Terriers have little to no chance of reaching the upcoming NCAA tournament.

O'Brien was sidelined last season as a medical redshirt after undergoing his second surgery on his left foot.  He originally injured his foot during the 2010-11 season.

O'Brien averaged career highs of 13.8 points and 6.4 rebounds as a sophomore. He was the America East rookie of the year as a freshman.

Temple coach Fran Dunphy "is a great coach," said O'Brien, who visited Temple two weeks ago. "After meeting his staff and the players, I knew it was the right fit for me."

Need his experience and front court depth this year. Hopefully he can spell Lee and Rahlir. Would be nice to get 20 min/gm out of him.

This kids game will fit in nicely with Temple's style of offense, and the Owls could use another offensive weapon.
