Bernard Hopkins' boxing career will come to a close on Dec. 17, a month before the Philadelphia native who transformed himself from inmate to world champion turns 52 years old.

Bernard Hopkins' boxing career will come to a close on Dec. 17, a month before the Philadelphia native who transformed himself from inmate to world champion turns 52 years old.

Hopkins, who fought his first professional fight in 1988 just months after being released from state prison, will meet 27-year-old light-heavyweight Joe Smith Jr. (22-1, 18 knockouts) at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif. Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KOs) has not fought since November 2014.
