Philadelphia welterweight Mike Jones to get a spot on major undercard

Inching closer to his goal of meeting Manny Pacquiao in a welterwight title bout, Mike Jones' next fight will come as part of a major undercard.

Inching closer to his goal of meeting Manny Pacquiao in a welterwight title bout, Mike Jones' next fight will come as part of a major undercard.

The undefeated Mt. Airy native's next bout will come on the undercard of either Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez on Nov. 12 at Las Vegas' MGM Grand or Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito on Dec. 3 at either Madison Square Garden or Las Vegas, according to his camp.

A September fight in Atlantic City is ninety percent ruled out.

In June, Top Rank Promotions president Bob Arum placed Jones on a list of possible opponents to challenge Pacquiao in 2012 for the WBO welterweight championship.

There is not yet a list of opponents for Jones' next fight, but the details should be finalized in about four weeks. In the event that Jones loses his match on the undercard, he would also likely lose his chance to face Pacquiao.

In a stay-busy fight in June, Jones put away club fighter Raul Munoz with a second-round technical knockout at the Asylum Arena in South Philadelphia. He is 25-0 on his career with 19 knockouts and holds the North American Boxing Association and North American Boxing Organization welterweight titles.

At 5-feet-11, Jones would have a height advantage of 41/2 inches over Pacquiao. Last November, Jones downed Jesus Soto Karass in a close decision on the undercard of Pacuiao's win over Margarito at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Jones again beat Soto Karass in February at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay.
