LAS VEGAS - Joe Calzaghe insists he won't blink when Bernard Hopkins gives him the "jailhouse stare" during nose-to-nose, prefight instructions Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Calzaghe has never seen the inside of a cell, but, the 36-year-old Welshman said, that makes him no less tough.
"He thinks he can intimidate me because he's been to prison for robbery," Calzaghe said from his training camp in Newbridge, Wales, before he came here for his first fight in America. "So what? So you burgled somebody, you brave boy. [Bleeping] wow wee. That makes you a thug, not a fighter. It makes you an idiot."
As for Hopkins' claim that he would give him a "facelift" during the bout, Calzaghe laughed that off, too.
"He's the ugly one," Calzaghe said. "His nose is flat across his face. So much for a great defense. He must have walked into a lamppost to get a nose like that." *
