Eagles running back Brian Westbrook returned to practice today, a rare session for him on the harder indoor surface.

Coach Andy Reid said yesterday that he held Westbrook out of practice because the session was indoors and he did not want to aggravate Westbrook's ankle issues. Reid said the decision was not related to Westbrook's concussion.

Offensive tackle Jason Peters (ankle) did not practice. That is the second consecutive day he did not practice. If he can't play Todd Herremans -- who was taking snaps in practice at left tackle -- would slide over and Max Jean-Gilles would play left guard.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg expressed concern today about the up-and-down offense, and likened it to last season, when things smoothed out down the stretch.

"We’ve done that early in the season a couple of times and then we’ve been able to gain some consistency down the stretch," he said. "That’s where we’re at. We know where we’re at. We’re trying to get better every day and if you have that old mentality with the hard work, preparation, ‘you get better every day,’ good things tend to happen, and then you get some guys a little bit healthier and then good things happen. That’s our mentality right now.”

Defensively, coordinator Sean McDermott confirmed that Chris Gocong will make his debut at middle linebacker with Will Witherspoon moving over to the weakside in place of the injured Akeem Jordan. Moise Fokou will start on the strong side for the second consecutive week. Fokou missed yesterday's practice with the flu, and he said today he is still ailing, but practicing and intending to play.

Mike Patterson was listed as a limited participant for the second consecutive day with a toe injury.

Putting the defense together this week is "a challenge we look forward to, and expect to rise above," McDermott said.

"When it rains, it pours," McDermott said. "We're going ahead with who we have available to use, and we look forward to seeing those players execute, and playing at a high level, like we've done to this point."

Also, strong safety Quintin Mikell noted that San Diego's Antonio Gates "is the best tight end in the game. We have to be on point." Tight ends have been a struggle for the Birds this year, even before the most recent batch of injuries scrambled the secondary and the linebacking corps.

Quintin Demps (ankle) did not practice, which is significant because he is the Eagles' first option to return kicks with Ellis Hobbs sidelined. If Demps cannot play, the Birds will go to Jeremy Maclin.

The loss of suspended corner Joselio Hanson means the Eagles will need a new gunner on return coverage. “We’re going to work some different guys in there," special teams coordinator Ted Daisher said. "A variety of people will get an opportunity to do that. Reggie [Brown] will probably be one that will get some looks and we’ll see how the week goes and see who is healthy and go from there.”

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?, WE'LL NEVER WIN THE BIG ONE WITH REID AND MCNABB. "MEDIOCRITY IS OUR CREED"

"Softybrooks." Now there's a real cute comment. You can always tell who's never really played football.

westbrook has been one of the top backs in the league for at least the past 5 years. he was our only weapon and we rode him into the ground. the guy won many games by himself. lets lay off the softybrooks comments. If we had weapons like celek & jackson throughout westbrooks career he'd still be ripping it up today.

I get the feeling that Westy will not hold up and be on the sidelines for a lot of the games coming down the stretch. Probably his last year playing here. It appears that the ankle surgery he had is still a problelm and will be a weekly issue for him.

I'm starting to get that "uh-oh" feeling again. BWest is a true pro, but his heart will not be able to overcome his infirmities. Just need him to spell Shady once in a while. I'm afraid the defensive back 7 has undergone WAY too many changes to be as effective as they need to be against this truly impressive Charger offense. Gonna be a long plane ride home I'm afraid....BUT!....GO IGGLES!!!

Sixteen years of Light Loafers Lurie and Ratface Banner. Eleven years of Fat Andy and Don-No-Win. Forty-nine years without a title. Why are you people still even following this pathetic franchise? Get a life !!

It's not about running the ball. Westbrook's return is a big boost to our passing game. He picks up the blitz and is always in the right spot for a last moment Donovan check down. Donovan's ability to evaulate the play downfield is completely different when Westbrook is in. Expect the Eagles offense to improve this week. I love McCoy's potential, but he has a great deal more to learn.....he'll get there.

Baloney you "fans". You should all be down here in DC. I think you saw that although McCoy did well on that 1 long gain, he missed blocks, and passes, plus he turned his runs the wrong way. Westbrook made McNabb and Reid look like a genius (Softybrooks??? I'd like to see you take a shot in the head like he did against Washington then come back and play 2 weeks later). Westbrook's a man and he gives his all unlike certain players. He's been the best player on this team since he became a starter. You people are weird.

it won't be Westbrook that loses the chargers game.

daoust555.....you are correct, and it's also why Dmac got hurt so much as well (Reid's reluctance to provide "max" protection a la Brady and Manning). It would have been nice to have playmakers back when both were in their prime....sad to say they're past it now.

Surprising that they are moving Gocong AND Witherspoon to address the LB situation. Is Fokou that much better than Joe Mays so that they couldn't put him in the middle in between Gocong and Witherspoon? Witherspoon played a lot of weak side for the Rams, so no one is really out of position. Odd that they've totally given up on Mays so fast, and while Fokou looks promising, he certainly doesn't look ready for starting work.
