Atlantic 10 Tournament champion Temple earned a 5 seed and will open NCAA Tournanent play against 12th-seeded Cornell at 12:30 on Friday at Jacksonville, Fla.

And for Temple coach Fran Dunphy, the opposing coach will be a familiar face. Cornell is coached by Steve Donahue, who was an assistant coach at Penn, under Dunphy. Donahue and Dunphy were together for 10 years at Penn.

“I would have rather see any other name except for Cornell because Steve and I are such good friends,” Dunphy said.

Cornell (27-5) was the Ivy League champion.

The Owls have made the NCAA field the last 2 years, but lost in the first round each time. Last year, Temple fell to Arizona State, 66-57. In 2008, the Owls lost to Michigan State, 72-61.

“We’ve been there two years," Temple guard Ryan Brooks said. "Now we want to go there and win some games this time.”

Temple’s last victory in the NCAA Tournament was in 2001, when the Owls defeated Penn State, 84-72, in a regional semifinal before losing to Michigan State, 69-62

The Owls (29-5) defeated Richmond, 56-52, in the Atlantic 10 title game at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Sunday afternoon. It was the third consecutive A-10 Tournament title for coach Fran Dunphy’s Owls.

Temple sophomore Juan Fernandez was the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer after averaging 16.3 points per game in the Owls’ three victories.

The Owls come into the NCAA Tournament having won 10 consecutive games.

The Temple-Cornell winner will play the winner of Wisconsin-Wofford.

About the Big Red: Donahue, a Cardinal O’Hara High grad who was an assistant at Philly U. and Penn before heading to Ithaca in 2000, is creating his own dynasty, having won three straight Ivy titles ... Cornell, which has won seven in a row, has victories over power-conference teams such as Alabama, Massachusetts and St. John’s. And don’t forget the Big Red led No. 1 Kansas into the final minute of play in Lawrence ... Wittman is the most consistent scoring threat, inside and outside, but Donahue’s guys can get it done with defense, too. Foote swats away nearly two shots per game and guard Wroblewski is tough to shake.

well, ashley fox was right..a #5 seed for temple (sporting news had them projected as a 3?)..clearly, the committee not impressed wth the atlantic 10, and cant really blame them... cornell matchup could be interesting.... one common opponent would be kansas...cornell had a lead at the phog allen fieldhouse with under a minute to go, while temple got plastered at Liacorus by KU....

you have to be kidding me with this seed. good thing they won the a10, otherwise they'd have been a 16 or something.

Temple didn't get any respect. They would have been a well-deserved #4. # would have been a stretch. Villanova a #2? Are you serious. They have a clear path to the Sweet 16 and that is not deserved at all with the way they've played.

give the nod to Cornell in this game. Donahue is a great coach and the team plays solidly. Temple is good but is prone to spurts of wildness which will hurt them against Cornell

Apparently beating Villanova isn't as impressive as one would think. Seriously, Villanova a 2 and Temple a 5? How much did Nova pay for that seeding?

keeping temple in the east region was the consolation for their #5 seeding. i see cornell giving them lots of problems but if temple can get through the first round, no reason they can't be a sweet 16 team.

I was surprised by the Nova #2 and the easy path they have for a number 2. But before Temple fans go nuts, look at the Nova schedule and who they beat. Every night in the big east is a big game plus they play a strong out of conference schedule. I thought Nova would be a 4. As far as Temple and Cornell, why???? Why does the committee always think it is "cute" to pair up friends or coaches against former teams.

Hard as it may be to believe, I think hawk18 hit the nail on the head. As a Villanova fan, I was hoping for a three seed but would have been happy with a four. I'm shocked they are a two and think they have a better shot at the Final Four than they did last year. Temple is a legitimate five, but there is no way Cornell is anything less than a seven. Having said that, Cornell plays a modification of a system that Dunph invented and Temple has much better athletes. I think both Philly teams have a legitimate shot at playing on the second weekend. GO CATS! GO OWLS.

no soap radio for twenty dollar stores is unnecessary oil change between the foul line and three point range with 3.8 seconds remaining in overtime #2.

The Owls will put Big Red to Bed, and 'Novavation will clobber The Colonials. After that, it's a free for all...

Temple needs to get out of the A-10 and into a power conference.

I think Temple is better off in east than a higher seed. They did not get a higher ranking as the A10 is down this year. If they were inb a power conference, they would be getting more respect but you have to wonder if their record would be as good. I think Dunphy is on the way to establishing a solid program. Let's hope Martelli gets back on track next year.

I know the A-10 is not great, but 29-5, 14-2 in conference; regualr season and tourney champs; ranked 17th going into the A-10 tourney with an RPI of 9, and 9 or 10 straight wins. They earned at least a 4, maybe a 3. Nova deserved a 4, at very best a 3, and caught a big break. Hey, I went to Penn and have always rooted for all Big 5 schools first...and will continue to do so.

Woo-dee-do? Poor Richard may be surprised by Cornell. Cornell boasts two of the 64 players (Ryan Wittman who was selected as a first team mid major and Jeff Foote) invited to the Portsmouth Invitational NBA pre draft camp. Cornell leads the nation in 3 point shooting percentage at over 43% and has 6 players who get significant playing time who shoot the three at better than 42%. They beat St John's handily -- a team that beat your beloved Temple. The were leading Kansas for almost all of their game AT KANSAS and lost by 5 -- Kansas beat your beloved Temple on your home court by over 30. Bill Self, the Kansas coach, stated, in the post-game interview, that "nobody will want to face Cornell in the tournament." In that game Jeff Foote (Cornell's center) played Cole Aldrich, Kansas' all American center dead even. True, Cornell dropped one to Penn but came back and beat them by 20 in the return match. The first Penn game was a fluke.
