A week from today, the Eagles open the season against the Packers at the Linc.

In no particular order, here are some thoughts on the roster, cuts and news from the weekend.

* A year ago, the Eagles opened training camp with hopes of having Shawn Andrews and Stacy Andrews playing next to each other on the right side. Now, both guys are elsewhere. While it's convenient to lump the two together, their situations really were different. Let's not forget that Shawn started 50 games with the Eagles, including a stretch from 2005-2007 in which he started 47 of 48. He was an All-Pro one season and a two-time Pro Bowler. Stacy gave the Eagles two lackluster starts, and that was it.

League-wide, Shawn is being looked at as a comeback story. SI.com's Peter King indicated Andrews has a chance to win a starting job with the Giants. And both NFL.com and USA Today have written features on him in the last week. The NFL.com piece looks at the path Andrews has taken to get back in the league after the Eagles released him. The USA Today piece focuses on his battle with depression:

Offensive lineman Shawn Andrews, a Pro Bowl performer for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2006 and 2007 who is making a comeback with the New York Giants, learned that many fans in the City of Brotherly Love could not empathize when he was given that diagnosis in 2008.

"I've been called everything in letters," he says. "Some of the stuff I'm even embarrassed to say. One said, 'The next time I read your name, I hope it's in an obituary.' "

I was not on the conference call with Howie Roseman yesterday, but I thought this quote was interesting when he was asked about the fourth safety: "I think we have someone in mind here and I think [head] coach [Andy Reid] will go through that. I think we’ll talk to the players first before we announce that publicly."

The guys at Novacare will probably fill us in later on who Roseman is talking about, but if I had to guess, I'd say Dimitri Patterson might be the guy.

Charles Scott tweeted today that he's on the Cardinals' practice squad. The Eagles drafted Scott in the sixth round and dealt him to Arizona last week for cornerback Jorrick Calvin, who is currently on the Birds' 53-man roster.

* Looking at the other NFC East teams, the Cowboys only kept three cornerbacks on their roster. You've got to figure they'll make a move there before Week 1 against the Redskins.

* The only Eagles draft pick (not including Scott) to not make the 53-man roster was Owens, who is on the practice squad. Not the case in Washington. The Redskins cut four of their first six selections from the 2010 draft.

"The worst thing people can do is keep a draft pick just to keep a draft pick," Mike Shanahan told The Washington Post. "What you do is you keep the people who give you the best chance to win."

Amazing that 11 of the Birds 13 draft picks made the team so far. While ultimate success of this draft will be revealed when these guys take the field in real games, it does show how much of an overhaul the Eagles felt they needed to make. Time will tell but this draft could end up being one of Reid's best.

Wow, if we cut 4 of our first 6 draft picks, Howie would have to pull a Henry Hill and go into a "witness protection" program.

Damn straight, Reddgie. Could you imagine? Of course, I don't know what rounds they cut. Who was that Redskins coach from years ago who hardly kept anyone under 30?

Either the Eagles nailed it, or we had a bunch of stiffs in camp that got beat out by young legs. We'll see by week 6.

Sorry if I am pushing the envelope, but I don't think that keeping so many draft picks is so exciting. It just means that they cleared out higher paid professionals. It also causes me a chill down my spine. Just think, at the end of last season, imagine if general manage Joe Banner told Andy that he couldn't keep any of his high price veterans. That Donovan, and Sheldon and Brian and a handful of others had to be removed because the team was going to live on the past decade of competitiveness and increase their profits. That he hired Howie (a non-football guy) to act as cover when the team goes south and he fires Andy in two years. That what we have here is the same thing Phillies fans had when Bill Giles decided he could be president of the club, general manager. and director of the Farm system. IF that is the case, then we will have a decade of non-competitive football. And just remember, LA has a new stadium and no football team.

angrybear, you lost me after your first sentence. To recap: Banner tells AR that he has to cut high priced veterans (we won't get into the fact that these high priced veterans were also, coincidentally, declining in their respective ability to perform) immediately and promote an accountant to GM, to increase profitabilty mind you, so that he can be fired in 2 years? Sure, that seems absolutely realistic.

Trying to think what veteran was cut/traded/released that I'd rather have than the nice crop of rookies that we now have. If anything it points out how bad this team was last year and how much it over achieved. Looks to me the team is better in every department than it was last year when you consider rooks+trades+returnees. Getting through camp and the preseason without a season ending unjury is a nice bonus considering the MASH unit we were last year. More depth, younger, faster, more athletic. I see a promising season ahead if the coaches do their jobs.

Do or should the birds have any interest in Jordan Babineux, safety formerly of Seattle.

That's right, ingy9, George Allen. I agree, tpizza. What real talent did we cut? No arguments here with who they cut.
