Rookie defensive end Ricky Sapp has been placed on injured reserve and is out for the season.

Sapp had a knee injury and "tweaked it" during special teams practice Sunday. Coach Andy Reid said earlier today that Sapp might need knee surgery, and Sapp confirmed to your Eagletarian, via Twitter, that he will undergo surgery.

The stashing of Sapp on IR led to the Eagles claiming defensive end Pannel Egboh off waivers from the Texans.

Originally a rookie free agent signing of San Francisco in 2009, Egboh (6-6, 287) spent training camp with the 49ers but was released prior to the start of the regular season. He spent the final four weeks of the 2009 campaign on the Texans practice squad after being signed on Dec. 9.

Egboh had 15.5 sacks in 40 career games at Stanford.

The timing of the Sapp injury is fortunate, since Sapp, a fifth-rounder from Clemson, didn't impress as a linebacker in the spring and got a late, slow start when moved back to DE. He was probably not going to make the 53-man roster.

Can you say red shirt? Come on. The Eagles are stuffing their roster by putting these guys w/ minor injuries on IR.

Eagles need to demote Andrews and replace him with Cole or a guard from another team. Time for the Eagles to man-up and fix the problem.

This has all the makings of a 6-10 team. The time is yours.

if any eagle fan thinks this team can win more than 8 games, they are mislead, this team is in a transition year, next year they should win 10 plus season and in the playoffs. this organization traded #5 well knowing the plan was to take a step back to go forward.. simple as that...this team is so unproven and is void of leadership, 8 wins max and no playoffs, book it.

You dummies are aware that every team in the NFL does this, right? Stashing players on IR, signing nobodies/camp bodies/possible practice squaders are common practices. Stop acting as if the Eagles are desperate or clueless with this transaction. Your ignorance is showing.

Rather they IR him than cut him. He was fun to watch at Clemson. Give him another year to improve and perhaps make an impact. All teams do this. Skins just did it today with Malcom Kelly. Smart money says Cornelius Ingram is next.

Les BowenLes Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. Before that, he spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers. It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. He, his wife Barbara, and their two sons live in Haddon Township, New Jersey. E-mail Les at bowenl@phillynews.com and follow him on Twitter.

Paul DomowitchPaul Domowitch has been with the Daily News since 1982. He has spent most of his nearly 3 decades with the paper covering the Eagles and pro football. For the last 10 years, he’s been a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A native of Wilkes-Barre and a graduate of Wilkes University, Domo started his career in Texas, working first for the Midland Reporter-Telegram (1976-78), and then for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where he covered some god-awful Texas Ranger baseball teams. His first beat at the Daily News actually was boxing, which he covered just long enough to lose 2 sports coats to blood spatter before moving on to football. Domo and his wife Shelley, a University of Oklahoma grad who still hasn’t gotten over that Fiesta Bowl loss to Boise State 5 years ago, have 2 terrific daughters -- Allison, 28, who is an attorney in South Jersey, and Amy, 25, who works in administration for a professional baseball team.
