Red Wings' Ian White calls Gary Bettman 'an idiot'

POSTED: Saturday, November 17, 2012, 11:12 AM

The lights have been off at the Wells Fargo Center and other NHL arenas for more than a month and the frustration – and anger – level is growing.

Following a workout Friday, veteran Red Wings defenseman Ian White told the Detroit News exactly how he feels about NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

"I personally think he's an idiot," White said. "Since he's come in, he's done nothing but damaged the game.

"The moves he's made, teams that are struggling seem to be ones he put in places where there's not viable markets for hockey.

"Three lockouts (under Bettman's regime, including the entire 2004-05 season). I don't know if he's in control of the owners or what he's saying. (Eight) of the owners have to agree to have something passed —you'd think it would be at least 50 percent. It just doesn't seem like they're running a democratic process, if you will."

The league has canceled all games through Nov. 30 and is currently not negotiating with the players association.

Ian White is correct, Gary Bettman is an idiot. That guy needs to go so hockey can return for good.

Both sides are idiotic and are ruining the game.

He's not an idiot. He is a frontman for Robber Barons who are so competitive that they need an outside locus of control to regulate their overspending. Snider promised to lower ticket prices after the last lockout. Did he? I make 85000$ and can not or will not buy season tickets. If this lockout continues I am calling comcast and downgrading my service until the Phillies return. Can't watch NBA.

He may very well be an idiot as you say but your side of the coin is not joining the Mensa Society anytime soon either.

"...but your side of the coin is not joining the Mensa Society anytime soon either."

This from the guy who clicked on the "submit" button three times.

Ian White: "...I don't know if he's in control of the owners or what he's saying. (Eight) of the owners have to agree to have something passed —you'd think it would be at least 50 percent. It just doesn't seem like they're running a democratic process, if you will."

Well at least we finally know that it only requires eight teams to form a "majority" in the 30-team NHL.

And I'm reasonably certain we can all agree on which eight teams are having this hissy-fit: Columbus, Nashville, Minnesota, Islanders, Panthers, Tampa, Carolina, and Phoenix (which is actually currently "owned" by the NHL).

So, thank you rednecks, for the latest lock-out.

"You players get a 50/50 deal and turn it down????..."

Obviously you have not been following this story very closely, or else your reading comprehension is down around zero.

To recap: The owners never actually offered a 50/50 split of HRR that didn't involve abrogation of existing player contracts, signed by the NHL as recently as June 2012.

The "50/50" clause was a gambit designed to sway fans who were not actually paying attention to the NHL's total CBA offer. Read it and you will discover that the NHL's "make whole" provision actually involves the players making themselves "whole" by paying into escrow part of their salary which the NHL would then give them back at some future date to make them whole. I would characterize this as Rube Goldberg, except I don't want to needlessly besmirch the good name of Rube Goldberg.

Actually it's Philly.com's web master who should apologize.

This is the slowest, clunkiest web site I've seen in a long time. It also has some totally illogical behavior.

Case in point: When you open the home page, in the upper right corner it probably shows a "Welcomed 1955h" message.Okay, you have cookies enabled so it recognizes you as "1955h". But when you scroll through the messages you see, in the lower right-hand portion of every post, a link in blue that indicates "sign in to report abuse".

Now first, you're already signed in, didn't it display "Welcome d1955h"?

Second, if you click on it you discover that if you log in (again) now each message has the following at the bottom of each post:

"Like" "Dislike" "Respond" and "Report Abuse".

You never see those links unless you log-in AGAIN, which explains why so few people respond to a post, they just create a new post in response which appears at the bottom of the list of posts.

And, it gets even better. You are logged-in, but you switch to a different article. Guess what? It wants you to log-in yet again!

Computers are very good at remembering things on a hard drive. Why Philly.com's web source code does not take advantage of that fact is bewildering.

So, Philly, com, if you are reading these posts, and care, please fix this goofy web site behavior. If you need help let me know and I'll show you how.

If all he's done is ruin the game, why has revenue and ratings been increasing the past several seasons?

Since being appointed as the 1st NHL commissionner,Gary Bettman has
done a lot of positive for the game of hockey. His tenure started Febuary 1st 1993,with a mandate to expand the game in the U.S.,sign bigger/better television deals, take care of expansion to new cities.

When he took over in the 90's,the NHL was a 400 million dollars operation, nowadays,we are talking a 3.3 billion dollars in revenue for
a league that his now in 5 new markets in the U.S.,the 6th was relocated in Winnepeg. The game has never receive so much exposure since he's been in the picture.Revamped All-Star game format,Olympic
participation,Winter Classic, expansion to new cities created more opportunity for players to reach the NHL,therefore, make a great living
    playing hockey.
The one blemish on his hands...labor unrest, but in all fairness,Bettman his the mouthpiece for the governors of the NHL,we usually shoot the messenger, anyone who has been following hockey for quite some time, would know that the game has never been so good, and so
expose all over the world, and I believe that mister Gary Bettman deserve some credits,in growing a game most of us love to watch...

As for Ian White...43 goals in 478 games,a journeyman at best, would probably be a career AHLer if it was not for a over expanded league.
Calling out the one person (Bettman)an idiot, the one who has done more for the NHL,then the Ian White of the game, who will do nothing
more then collect a pay check and believe in the end the game owes him something...some of these players, have no idea how the big wheel
    spins...

    mean mean pride,mean mean pride.

Ian White is a stay-at-home defenseman, so 43 career goals is pretty good, eh?
