Everybody in the AL East is trying to punch through for a playoff spot. Well, except the Red Sox, who have the division locked up, and the Blue Jays, who are awful. But the other three are jostling up and down for a Wild Card solution to their problems, making the competition fierce, and sometimes, drunk.
The Red Sox are in the middle of a series with the Rays in Tampa, where last night, a young man downed a few beers (What he called "two" but was probably closer to "more") and then decided to take part in that classic baseball tradition of strangling the other team's mascot to death.
Now, the Rays have one of those mascots ("Raymond") that looks like some intern snatched it out of the dumpster of an off-Broadway children's playhouse. But I'm sure he doesn't deserve what three-named Boston suburbanite Trevor James Martin wanted to do to him.
Martin, 27, reached across the stadium's railing and twice grabbed Raymond by the neck, officers said. Martin was staggering, slurring his words and smelled of alcohol, according to an arrest affidavit. Raymond pushed back and broke free, police said.
All of which begs the question, wh... where is that thing's neck?
