MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Infielder Cody Ransom was designated for assignment to clear space for the addition of first baseman Mike Sweeney to the 25-man roster Thursday.

Ransom hit .190 with two home runs and five RBIs. He had one of the season's most memorable hits, a pinch-hit, two-run home run to cap a wild ninth-inning comeback against the Reds on July 9.

The subtraction of Ransom means John Mayberry Jr., who was recalled Tuesday from triple-A Lehigh Valley, will stick for now. Mayberry can play the outfield and with Ross Gload possibly spending more time at first base, the Phillies decided Mayberry was more valuable to the bench than Ransom.

Sweeney has arrived in Florida and will join the Phillies after being acquired in a trade Wednesday with Seattle. He will not start Thursday, Charlie Manuel said. Instead, Gload will man first base for a second straight game.

The 40-man roster sits at 39 players.

i wonder why they didn't just outright him to the minors instead of DFAing him, they might need him once the rosters expand to 40. From what I understand, when you DFA a guy he comes off the 40 man.

If Sweeney gets hurt again, they could get a kid out of high school to come in and hit .190. Valdez is doing a nice job. He isn't going to hit, but he plays great defense. The Phillies have to play great defense and have good pitcing in order to survive the next couple of weeks.

Valdez is the only guy on the bench who could replace Jimmy if he gets hurt. Why would you want to get rid of him? Like realzeel said he plays good defense at SS and 2nd and has good speed. The only speed of the bench when Brown is playing.f

Ok, genius, let's get rid of Valdez. He plays 2B, SS, 3B, and the corner OF positions...all with a flawless glove. We haven't needed a guy like that this year, have we?!?

All he could do was sit "dead red" on a fastball which usually never came. He was the most consistant hitter in baseball. He hit .190 last year backing up A-Rod and .190 this year backing up the entire Phils infield. It's called the "Ransom Line"

Valdez has been a godsend to this team. Ransom is 34 and still bouncing back and forth to AAA. Hopefully a platoon of Gload and Sweeney will hold the fort at first until the big man gets healthy. It sure would be a good time for Werth to show he can pick the team up. If continues the way he has been going he should not be re-signed. They have enough good outfielders without him anyway: Victorino, Brown, Ibanez, Francisco and Mayberry. He needs to prove he can be the man or no way anybody is going to pay him the Bay/Holliday $$$ his agent has been talkng about.

Valdez is a great and very valuable defensive infielder, june. I guess nobody really watches baseball for defense anymore. He basically hitting right where you'd expect him if not better at .241 with 4 homeruns and 25 rbis. I'll take that all day from my utility infielder. Do you not remember Eric Bruntlett???

Werth won't be re-signed. This is his last year in red pinstripes - productive or not.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
