Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is out indefinitely after having surgery for a broken jaw, the team’s Twitter account announced Sunday.
Crosby was hit in the face by a slap shot from teammate Brooks Orpik during Saturday’s game against the New York Islanders. The puck knocked out several of Crosby's teeth.
The Pens still managed to defeat the Isles, 2-0, despite the injury to their 25-year-old captain. The victory extended the team's winning streak to 15 games and secured an undefeated month of March.
Losing Crosby, arguably the NHL’s best player, is still a huge blow for the Eastern Conference-leading Penguins with the playoffs roughly a month away.
