As noted yesterday over at Eagletarian, Joe Banner went on Comcast SportsNet to talk about the Sheldon Brown situation.

I thought I'd deliver exactly what he said for anyone who missed it:

"DeMarcus Ware had 20 sacks this year, led the NFL, right now he's making a million dollars next year. Have you heard anything from DeMarcus Ware? Tom Brady's gonna make $14 million over the next two years.  That's $7 million a year. The top-paid quarterback in the league's making 16. Have you heard anything from Tom Brady? By the way, Tom Brady's got two years left on his deal. DeMarcus Ware has one. And I could give you example upon example. He has four years left on his contract, received a very sizable signing bonus as part of the deal. That has to be factored into the value of the two years he's played under the contract this coming year, whatever it was. And that's the only reasonable way to look at it.

"The thing that distressed me was I heard today that he had said that anybody who thought this was about the money was crazy. He needs to tell his agent that because we have had no conversations with his agent that have been about anything but the money. Now only two years into the deal with four years left, you know... James Harrison was the defensive player of the NFL last year, probably almost single-handedly responsible for the Pittsburgh Steelers winning the Super Bowl. He made less than one and a half million dollars last year. And now in the last year of his contract, the Steelers stepped in and gave him the adjustment. We're talking about somebody with four years left in their contract. I don't believe there's a single player in a number of number of years with that much time left on his contract that any team, including the MVP of the league, went to, so you have to have some perspective on this."

More coming later today, including a draft profile of UConn running back Donald Brown.

As much as I hate Joe Banner I have to agree with his stance on the Sheldon Brown situation (wow I can't believe I just said that). However, at the same time, I think the Eagles would save themslevbes a lot of problems if they just dealt with their players better and showed them some respect. Dawkins would have came back for less money than he got if they just showed them that they wanted him. I bet Sheldon would not be putting up a fuss if he was able to sit down and talk to Banner instead of just being treated like a scrub.

Cmon Lemur if Banner does this for Brown then everybody on that team will be wanting a new deal. The Eagles cannot do this and never done something like this when a player has this many years left on his deal. Why didn't Sheldon come out publicly when Lito was here? Because he know he had no leverage, no with Lito gone Sheldon got full of himself. All I know is he better be playing like a pro bowler this year.

Banner is one of the main reasons the Eagles have been to so many NFC championships. Banner could give Sheldon's defenders two hours of examples. He knows who makes what when better than anyone in the league. He makes sure the salary cap doesn't blow up so we can sign Stacey Andrews and Jason Peters when we need to - and Sean Taylor and Weaver. 4 solid additions, probably more solid than most of the four first picks for any team in the league. Sheldon - be quiet!

I have to agree with Banner on this one. I'd be fine with trading Brown if we get a proven starter in return, or a high draft pick.

pdditty you are absolutely right.. im kind of shocked that brown is going off like this... i think it is more than just his contract situation.. i think he was really tight with dawk and he saw how dawk didnt get paid here and he saw how the eagles allowed dawk to walk without really making an effort to keep him.. now there is someone, dawkins, who really had the right to take his salary issues public.. but he never did.

banner is right on this one...sheldon has no leverage..he didnt make the pro bowl and had 1 int and he is 2 years into a 6 year deal that he signed...his agent should have did his homework every year players salaries go up and they had every chance to negotiate a deal accordingly...if he doesnt wanna be here trade him he can hit but he cant cover that well anyway

Banner is saying: play hard for 3 more years, then we'll talk about it. Translation: you will be cut or traded in 3 years unless you become an MVP type player.

Stop saying the Eagles have shown no "respect." That's just wrong. The Eagles didn't have to give Sheldon, Lito, Trent or Shawn lucrative long-term contracts. Sorry, but that's the biggest sign of respect there is. These guys just get jealous and greedy because they see other players, who are better, making more cash. Too bad. Don't sign the extension. Bottom line: Sheldon hasn't done enough to prove he's worth a new deal.

Sheldon is throwing a fit because he's 30 years old and won't be able to renegotiate his contract until he is 33 or 34. That's the problem here. By the time his contract expires, he's going to be past his prime and therefore wont be able to get as much money. In addition to that, he knows that the Eagles wont resign a 34 year old DB. He saw what happened to Brian Dawkins, who is the same age now as Sheldon will be when his contract expires. He's basically choosing the Lito Sheppard route instead of the Brian Dawkins route. Let's be honest, if the Eagles wouldn't resign Dawkins at 34, then they're sure as hell not going to resign Brown. If he gets traded to a team who is willing to renegotiate his contract now, he'll be able to maximize the amount of money he gets. He knows that his value will never be higher than it is now. Despite this, it makes no sense for the Eagles to consider trading him or renegotiating. His options are essentially to honor his contract, as he should, or sit and lose a year or more of his prime. He's put himself in a no win situation, but I understand what he's doing here. It just sucks he had to go and rain on the Jason Peters parade.

So, Sheldon is just as money hungry as the Eagles. Sounds like the Eagles are slowly dying by the sword.
