Brett Myers returns to Clearwater on Thursday as an Astro. (Rob Carr/AP)

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- On Thursday in Clearwater, Brett Myers will pitch against the Phillies for the first time in his life when the Astros visit for a Grapefruit League game.

It's making Charlie Manuel sentimental.

"I miss Myers," Manuel said. "I miss getting on him. I miss his mouth. I miss everything. I think in our camp this year, it’s been a little quieter without Myers."

Myers, who spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Phillies, signed a one-year, $5.1 million contract with Houston during the off-season. Shortly after the Phillies were defeated by the Yankees in the World Series, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told Myers he would not be offered a new contract.

Manuel said he understands the reasoning behind Myers not returning.

" I think the size of his contract, the money he was making, he has a chance to make in the future," Manuel said. "It all got back to a business aspect of it. I wish Myers all the luck in the world as long as the Phillies whip him. Seriously. I pull for Brett, but not when he pitches against the Phillies."

When Myers signed his contract with Houston in January, he promised to "stick it" to the Phillies every time he faces them.

Manuel said he expects to see the "same old" Myers on Thursday.

"I’ll be getting on him," Manuel said. "He’ll be making gestures back at me and everything. He can’t help himself."

The Phillies did right by cutting ties with Myers. We all remember his key hits and walk in the playoffs of 2008 but that alone is not the basis for him staying.. He'll have a hard time keeping an ERA of under 5.00 in Houston this year.

Good riddance. Honestly, part of what the Phils have done (unlike the mucking fets) is to build not only quality players on the field, but quality people in the clubhouse, ala releasing Abreu, parting ways with Burrell, and, now, cutting ties with Myers. The guy certainly had heart and his arm was big league, but I'm glad we don't have to deal with this redneck anymore.

Philth, I completely agree with you except for the part about Myers having a big league arm. I think he proved last year that he can only get good big league hitters out by accident.

Big, I think that's a reference to Lidge's facial appendage.

Glad he's gone. He's a jerk and a headcase. The Phillies didn't bother to offer him a contract, wonder why?

And there's Kenny Junod and his disturbing obsession with players' moles.

I will never forget the effort Brett Myers gave us down the strech in 2007. In spite of everything else, that 7.5/17 championship run is probably more special then any other year for me as a phillies, fan. The ghosts of 1964 were handed off the the GD Mets. I will forever be grateful for the efforts of Myers, Gordon and Romero.

For every good effort there were three poor ones. His moment in the sun was as a closer, and I am kind of puzzled that he wanted to be a starter again. Hope we beat his (rather small) brains in.

Said it before, and I'll say it again. Love Myers, and hope he does well in every game this year except the ones he pitches against the Phils. Two of the best moments in recent Phils, heck, in all of Phils history: the at bat against CC, and throwing the glove in the air when Phils clinched the NL east in 2007.

You need someone with attitude on your teams. Sometimes he rubs a teammate or management the wrong way, but more often he gets inside the heads of opponents. Hopefully someone can step in that role.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
