A little more than a week before the Eagles open the regular-season at the Linc against the Packers, head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg still are being purposely vague about their plan for Mike Vick in the offense.

We weren’t able to glean much about Reid’s plans for Vick in last night’s 21-17 preseason loss to the Jets. With Kevin Kolb getting the night off, Vick started this NFL equivalent of watching paint dry, playing a little more than a quarter before joining Kolb on the sideline. He completed 3 of 5 passes for 56 yards and rushed for 11 yards on 2 carries.

Last week’s game against the Chiefs may have offered the best clue for how Reid and Mornhinweg intend to use Vick. With Kolb playing almost three quarters of that game, Vick twice replaced him on third-and-short situations.

Entered the game on a third-and-1 at the Philadelphia 41 on the Eagles’ third possession and ran for 5 yards and a first down. Later, he replaced Kolb on a third-and-2 at the Eagle 47 and gained 8 yards.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Mike Vick, your short-yardage quarterback.

I’m sure a fair share of you think it’s a bad idea to yank your starting quarterback in key situations such as third-and-1 and third-and-2. I’m guessing it’s not an idea that really thrills Kolb to death either.

But if the Eagles want to have any hope of making a deep playoff run this season, they absolutely, positively must get better on third down. No offensive deficiency hurt them more in ’09. And no player may be able to help change that more this season than Vick.

If we’ve learned anything about the guy in this preseason, it’s that he’s got his legs back. He once again is the catch-me-if-you-can scrambler we knew before he lit a match to his life and his career.

Spread out the opposing defense with a three-wide receiver set on third-and-2 and the opposing defense is faced with a dilemma. Do they bring up the safety in the box to defend against the run and leave DeSean Jackson and/or Jeremy Maclin with a one-on-one opportunity on the outside, or do they keep the safety back and try to defend Vick with a nickel front of 4 linemen and 2 linebackers?

It's gotta be better than what they've been doing. Gives MM a chance to talk to Kolb on the sideline and hopefully use that as an advantage to gameplan the rest of the drive.

Anyone remember when Buddy Ryan used to yank Ron Jaworski on third down and put Randall Cunningham in?

The wildcat is today what the Run n' Shoot was 15 years ago. A way for inferior teams to compete with the teams that can ACTUALLY play this game. And Elijah, did you NOT watch the last two games? LOL!!!!

Philly Ray, I remember that, those teams never won anything either, LOL!!!!! I love how Eagles fans are so content to "compete" instead of win. If anyone needs me, I'll be at the Phils game....

Please give me a break about Kafkobb and BABYARM ok? Kalfkobb was 1-15 at one point and BABYARM has yet to exhibit that legenendary accuracy you drones used to rave about all summer. Mike Vick as the season progresses will become more and more of the Superstar he was in Atlanta and drag this sorry team to the NFC Championship game <3

@deagoon6, ditto. @Bleue, if Kolb doesn't have it by gametime, there's nothing that Morningenius can add. And yeah, keep thinking the 'wildbird' option is our only way to make third and short yardage. None of the other teams will catch on when they see him come in. They should make the 'wildcat' extinct except it's Fatboy's only answer since he's got no short yardage option with the O-line he never addressed in the offseason.

vick is only hope after Kolb is injured in a sack fest by opponents.....son't hate him......hate the man who is the archetect of the draft and the man who supplied this team with non nfl talent on the offensive line.....and who thinks kolb is an nfl qb.....and maybe this is the year that jeff falls out of his manlove for andy and we get somebody in here who can win the big one......

The only problem with Vick is that every team will leave the WRs free and concentrate on Vick as he is a below average passer and always looks to run first. Most of time he will fail to pick up yards unless he changes his QB tendencies. Speaking of which I miss the 3 ladies the air guitar girl, braindawkins20, and the wolfie. Hope all 3 are fine and can come back with their asinine comments.
