This isn't too much of a surprise: ESPN's College GameDay football show is headed to Tuscaloosa, Ala., this coming Saturday for the 7 p.m. Penn State-Alabama matchup.

ESPN will broadcast the game, and it is the featured telecast across the Disney networks as ABC will have NASCAR in prime time.

It will be a huge test for Penn State, especially true freshman quarterback Robert Bolden. But if there is one ray of hope for Nittany Lions fans, it is this: Alabama is 0-5 in games that have brought College GameDay to Tuscaloosa.

September 1, 2001: UCLA 20 at Alabama 17
October 5, 2002: Georgia 27 at Alabama 25
September 6, 2003: Oklahoma 20 at Alabama 13
November 12, 2005: LSU 16 at Alabama 13 (OT)
September 22, 2007: Georgia 26 at Alabama 23 (OT)

Before 2001, the only GameDay games in which Alabama was the home team were played in Birmingham.

So tell me, Nittany Lions fans: does Penn State have a shot to beat the defending national champions?

Joe Pa will try and shoot an elephant in his pajamas. How an elephant got in his pajamas I'll never now. Of course, in Alabama the Tuscaloosa.

Alabama 28... Penn State 16.....but Penn State will beat Iowa and Ohio State and win the Big 10 Championship.

I am going to go out on a limb and be the only person in the country to accurately predict Penn State's 17-13 win against Alabama this Saturday. The Penn State offense will struggle with the new quarterback and weak offensive line, but they will score a touchdown with a designed first drive of the game, get a field goal in the second quarter, and put together a short touchdown drive off a fumble in the late third or early fourth quarter. The Penn State defense will prove to be tougher than Alabama predicted and keep the Tide to an early touchdown and 2 late field goals. The bad news is that the victory will go to the Penn State team's head, as big early victories often do, and the overconfident young team will get shellacked 38-10 in Iowa City. Ohio State will repeat the insult later in the year, 35-14, and Penn State will finish 10-2 and go to the Capital One Bowl and play Florida, who will similarly crush them 27-13. ESPN will read my predictions on this web page and hire me as a GameDay analyst, replacing an aging Lee Corso with a handsome, young, up and comer.

Actually, I predict a huge thunderstorm will hit Saturday morning and the Bama stadium staff will realize they forgot to put some of that renovation money toward the field itself. The field will be a muddy mess. The score will be 10-10 with 5 seconds left in the game. Wagner will nail a 40-yard field goal to give Penn State a 13-10 victory. Blog boards everywhere will be filled with Bama/SEC fans complaining the field conditions took away the SEC speed and in better weather conditions Penn State would have gotten crushed. :-)

About Jonathan Tannenwald
I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

I write primarily about the University of Pennsylvania and the Ivy League, but I also cover the other basketball and football teams across the city from time to time. In the spring, you'll find coverage of the Penn Relays here.

In addition to all of that, I write Philly.com's soccer blog, The Goalkeeper.
