When Delran, N.J., native Carli Lloyd became a free agent after last year's inaugural season of Women's Professional Soccer, I wondered if the Philadelphia Independence might try to sign her.

This morning, Lloyd landed at the other end of her home state. The 27-year-old midfielder and Rutgers alum signed a deal with Sky Blue FC, which plays its home games at the Scarlet Knights' own Yurcak Field.

Sky Blue FC won the WPS title last season, by the way.

Lloyd did a conference call with a few reporters this morning, including the Daily News' Kerith Gabriel. Kerith sent along these quotes:

On joining Sky Blue FC:

The bonus is that I am coming to a team that already has accomplished so much. There are so many familiar faces that I know, and there is a big Jersey connection which I love. I know we will be able to gel well.

On leaving the Chicago Red Stars after this season:

You never want to dwell too much on the past. I learned a lot of things there, but I am excited to be back home and close to what I know.

On thoughts of playing for the Independence:

Well, you go through the process, and you weigh all the pros and cons. I am looking for a team I can grow with, and I feel comfortable and confident I can do that here. I am excited for the future, and I know I made the right decision for sure.

dpcoz
so, umm, How about those Temple Owls? Four game winning streak, improved defense, legitimate running threat, at the head of the MAC East, received a vote in the Harris Poll for the first time in (?) and CBS' first Bowl Projections have them playing NC State in the GMAC bowl, isn't that worth a blog post? I know they've been horrendous and an afterthought for decades but you have to note progress and improvement where you see it now and then.

I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.
