Well, Charlie Manuel's original plan was to sit Jayson Werth for a second straight game and play Domonic Brown in back-to-back games for the first time since Aug. 10-11.

But about two hours prior to first pitch, Brown was scratched with tightness in his right quad. He will see a doctor later Tuesday night for further evaluation.

Brown said he has felt the tightness for about a week. Sliding into home plate in the second inning of Monday's second game made things worse.

"There was a little more pain today," Brown said. "I iced it down and went out there for early hitting and it didn't feel too good. So we didn't want to make it any worse."

Werth will slide into the lineup where Brown was scheduled to hit -- seventh. It's the first time he is hitting that low in the order since Aug. 24, 2008, when he batted seventh.

Werth is 1 for 17 lifetime against Marlins starter Chris Volstad with seven strikeouts.

Big Ben can't play RF and his CF skills are marginal at best.

This is very troublesome. He's already sustained a hamstring injury that forced him to leave the AAA all star game, and now this. He's 22 years old already getting scratched with nagging injuries. Usually players are durable, or they will always be injured with something. It will only get worse from here, I fear. How can guys, seemingly in shape and so young, injure hamstrings and quads?!?! Either they are made of porcelain, or they're out of shape. Either way, it's a terrible sign.

Ben has a killer swing and hit the longest moonshot ever in Citizens Bank Park.....but Werth's bat is still a much surer thing.

Brown shouldn't be playing in place of an outfielder unless the outfielder is injured or tossed out of the game. Brown is a great talent, but isn't ready for prime time. He has too many flaws to overcome. He's exciting , but not yet ready.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
