The press release with the list of players available to the Philadelphia Union in Wednesday's expansion draft just landed in my inbox.

As I understand the draft rules, the key thing to know is that the Union can only take one player from each team. The rest of the rules pertain to which players can be made available and what kinds of contracts they can sign, so I won't go through all of them.

But what you really want to know is the list of players. Here it is, and there are some big names. I've bolded what I think are the marquee ones.

Segares is headed overseas. Onstad would retire than play in Philly. Speaking of Goalkeepers- Chris Eylander would be a better GK selection if his health checks out. He was 2008 Most Outstanding Player of the USOC and then had a year under Keller... And of course there is Nik Rimando who self-handedly [almost] won RSL the MLS Cup. VanDenBerg makes too much and is too old to build around. Oh and Riley is always left unprotected on Expansion Day... and selected. That must say something.

Is Segares confirmed to be going to a club in Europe? I know he's out of contract but that might not stop the Union from picking him if they think they can sign him.

I say get all the Philly-area players so we can suck. Then in a few years we can get players who can actually play and not worry about our demographics.

About Jonathan Tannenwald
I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

I write primarily about the University of Pennsylvania and the Ivy League, but I also cover the other basketball and football teams across the city from time to time. In the spring, you'll find coverage of the Penn Relays here.

In addition to all of that, I write Philly.com's soccer blog, The Goalkeeper.
