Barkley thinking Eagles Super Bowl
Sheil Kapadia, Philly.com
Count Charles Barkley among the many who love what the Eagles did this offseason.
Sir Charles joined Howard Eskin and Marc Farzetta on WIP Monday and predicted a Super Bowl for the Birds in 2009.
"Good luck to my Eagles too," he said near the end of the interview. "I think the Eagles are gonna win the Super Bowl."
"And I'm glad Donovan got his contract cause y'all have not been treating him well here Howard," Barkley continued. "You know I've been on your ass all the time. McNabb's the greatest quarterback in Eagles history and y'all have not gave him the love he deserve here."
Speaking of which, let's get to some more Eagles links that we missed while I was on vacation...
** SI.com's Ross Tucker shared Barkley's view on McNabb in a column last week. He wrote more on the topic in a mailbag, where a reader took exception with Tucker's assertion that fans here are too hard on McNabb:
When Donovan McNabb wins three Super Bowls, I think he will get the same respect from the fans as Tom Brady would if he got hurt again. As what happens with most national media, you need to be here week in and week out to know that 80 percent of Eagles fans love the fact that Donovan McNabb is our quarterback. Focusing on the negative 20 percent is more convenient because it is a story you can write. Same as 'they boo, they threw snowballs at Santa, yada yada yada...' Come to Philly and do a poll of people walking the street and find out the facts before you write an article. Don't ask your family either; they must be nitwits not to like him too.
--Craig Hanlon, Wayne, Pa.
[Tucker's response] Judging from my e-mails, it seems like it is more like 50/50 in terms of the Eagles fans and their feelings towards McNabb. I am from near Philadelphia and have a pretty good sense of the arguments both for and against McNabb, I just think the people that want to run him and Andy Reid should be careful what they wish for. And the people in my family actually like McNabb for the most part; it is my friends who dislike his "phony" (their word, not mine) personality and think he comes up small in the biggest games.
However, another reader took the opposite view on McNabb:
The answer to your question is easy. I will take one championship every 12 years and no wins all the other years vs. losing the NFC championship each year. McNabb creates his own problems by being an arrogant, conceited jerk.
--Rod Speiss, Reading, Pa.
[Tucker] Yeah, that is what most people said, and I can imagine if you have never won one that would pretty much be the sentiment. But I'd like to talk with you at the end of those 12 years and see if you really felt that way. Ostensibly, that title would last forever but my guess is by midway through the next season it would be just a thing of the past.
And so the never-ending McNabb argument goes on.
** Tom Curran of NBCSports.com calls the Eagles' offensive additions one of the 10 best moves this offseason.
** This is an old one that I never got to. Scout, Inc's Matt Williamson said the Eagles' biggest weakness is at No. 1 receiver:
To be honest, I had a hard time coming up with something to choose for Philadelphia. Obviously, I am very high on this team and yes, the Eagles are my current pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Of the 32 articles I did about each team's biggest weakness, this one was the last I wrote. I just couldn't really come up with much. That doesn't mean the Eagles are far and away the top team in the league right now, but they are the team with fewest holes.

Comment removed.- Charles needs to keep his trap shut about Philadelphia sports. When he was here, he did his best to try to get the Sixers over the hump by himself. Now that he's gone, he's only a mouthpiece for that idiot Howeird Espin. They should get married to each other since they are always patting each other's behinds. McWhiner will get the love he deserves when he WINS A SUPER BOWL FOR PHILADELPHIA!! He is appreciated for being the QB here but that is all! He has to win the BIG game and put it all out there like he did when he won a regular season game on a broken ankle. If he puts that kind of effort out there to win a Super Bowl for this team, he would be in higher regards that the President!
Charles is a fan of the NFL and of Philly teams. The difference between him and us is that Charles has a closer relationship to the players because of his athletic background and his position. Charles opinion is only that though just his opinion. If you look at all of the football experts predicting games they are wrong at least half of the time and if you look at football novices like lonewolf they are wrong 75-90% of the time. As far as the drinking and driving that was totally inexcusable but I can tell you from my perspective that the majority of people on Friday and Saturday night could get busted for DUI/DWI. So Lonewolf who are all of the people we should listen too? I guarantee if you name anyone I can give your numerous instances where they fall short. I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it

I'm not sure about #5. He hasn't brought us back to win a game late in a long time. But the wideouts he's had to work with other than to have been average at best. Until now. I think Curtis, Jackson, maclin, avant, baskett, and brown will give opposing teams major problems. I sure wish they had gotten gonzales. Cause on 4th and 10 against the cards in the NFC championship game, Curtis couldn't hang on It will be interesting CaptainCrunch
No Charles, the greatest QB's in Eagles history are those who won Championships. Not the whining basket case without any heart. Voytas

I have an issue with fans who rip McNabb his whole career, but will love him when he wins a Superbowl. That is the definition of fair weather, and is pretty embarrassing to be associated with. I think every player should be judged on his body of work, and his is pretty impressive. It particularly bothers me when fair weather fans alienate the athlete with this kind of mindset. Rather then appreciate a solid player while we have him, they push him to the point where he doesn't want to even talk to the media. Charles is right. At the very least, he should be acknowledged as an above average player and treated with the according respect, if not as a future HOFer which is what he likely is. VicFromLA

Lonewolf you are a sorry excuse for person. I bet you are horrible at your job. I mean how can you be good at whatever job you do (I personally think you work at Dunkin Donuts) as you are always on here adding your dumb comments to this blog. Lonewolf can you name 1 accomplishment that you have done in your life that is of any significance? and no winning a Super Bowl in Madden on xBox doesn't count I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it

Hey, what's wrong with working at Dunkin' Donuts? It's honest work! dlscholt
We have all of these yada yada yada nonsense people on here talking about heart and dedication. None of yall have played any sport at a high level. I bet most of yall didn't even play at a high level in high school. Who in here if they made 10 million a year would put in extra work at their job? If 90% of yall made a 10 million a year if anything happens that you don't agree with you would tell give your boss the business. The truth is yall are mad because you have to scrap for your little bit of change while others seemingly do not. That's just a sad existence. SAD SAD SAD SAD! lonewolf 4 & Panthro22 and all of the other nitwits are a bunch of wannabe's and jokers. Just make sure you have my donuts fresh and my coffee hot this morning when I stop by the Dunkin Donuts yall nitwits are working at. I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it
Person wrote 50/50 on love of McNabb, it is 90/10 10% don't like him and all the readers on this website are in the 10%. Deschak

McNabb is a class act who has reacted incorrectly at times.. Its called pressure! Im sure all of you would have made a mistake or two in his shoes.. He is our greatest QB ever! Stop all the hate you dimwits! He already has made our organization 1 of the best in NFL history.. Be hopeful he brings us a Super Bowl Victory cause when we were hoping to be winners DONOVAN made our HOPE real! II Greek II Logic II
Lonewolf how long did it take to amass so many AKA's? I tried so many and it kept coming back as taken. You must have put a lot of time into generating AKA's. You need to be more concerned with keeping your job at Dunkin Donuts and stop sneaking off genrating names. I expect my coffee hot and fresh and please take the dirty tip cup off the counter. I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it
Won't it be nice when there is really something to talk about? Camp opens when? craig123

What really bothers me with McNabb maybe not his fault. I grew up during the 70s and the 80s. I remember DR.J getting slamed for not winning the championship. I remember him being interviewed and standing up and putting the blame on himself. I would respect the guy more if he just stood up and said "I need to play better" or "Its on me" or "I lost the game". He just seems not to be a stand-up guy. dwaynem
Throw interception.....laugh. Throw swing pass 5 feet over backs head.....laugh. Lose in the playoffs.....laugh. Throw at receivers feet......laugh. Throw behind receiver.....laugh. Win playoff game....dance like an idiot on the sidelines. Win playoff game.....pick up phone and get critized by Aikmen. Yeah right, Greatest in Eagles history. What an insult to the guys who did it right. Voytas

Lonwolf since you have so much heart and dedication why don't you join the Army or the Marines? At least then you will not have waste so much time generating AKA's and writing complete nitwit remarks. If you want some info on the armed forces or want a career change talk to me tomorrow morning when I stop by Dunkin Donuts. I will be there at my usual time 8:00 sharp. I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it

I have seen Marines and Army service members throw up both in training and on the battlefield. It's a natural reaction when you give everything you have at a given moment but you wouldn't know that Lonewolf. I waiting for you to say something about our service members now in fact I dare you. There are a lot of Marines who respect McNabb because of his warrior like mentality. We know how to push ourselves to the limit and sometimes when you do your breakfast comes up but so what you keep driving on. I bet you have never pushed yourself to the brink. and once again Madden on the xBox doesn't count Lonewolf I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it

Really, putting down Dunkin Donuts workers? What a snob. What are you, some pipe smoking, elbow patch wearing, Ivy league professor? Go Eagles. Richard Saunders
I was in the service. Lets stop it. Please don't compare Mcnabb to a srevice person. PLEASE ITS REALLY SILLY. dwaynem
Aikman? Please he never threw the ball! Look at his stats he neverhad more than 20 TD's in any season. He had a WR who he couldn't control. M.Irving stabbed a man with scissors in the neck at a barbershop. Aikman did what he always did he kept quiet. He never stood up for anything. In fact he complained later in his career about pressure. Look at his interviews during the last 4 years of his playing career. All he did was complain about the pressure to play the game. I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it
dwaynem it's a free country for a reason. I made my point. It was that you can respect someone who pushes themselves to the limit. If this statement offended you then maybe you need to reevaluate yourself. I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it
These negative people don't matter. It's their frustration about losing coming out. If McNabb was to have an amazing year, and win the super bowl, everything would change. I wouldn't mind accepting those people back into the "loyal to your team club", and I actually would feel sorry for them to an extent. If they do win, there's gonna be a certain amount of cheapness in it for them. They won't be able to get to into it, knowing they practically disowned the team. Could you imagine lonewolf celebrating a perfectly played SB by McNabb? It would be cheap for him... MFPhils
I think what most people are upset about is this guy gets to much credit for not winning anything. I agree. The statement that he is the best QB in eagle history says nothing. That just says the standard has been set very low. How many championships the other QB have in eagle history? How many hall of famers are their? The steelers have two QB with more than one superbowl. The 49ers have two with at least one. Some other teams that have at least two QB's with one super bowl Dallas,Redskins,Giants,ect... Can we as fans raise the bar without hurting peoples feelings? Why are you as a fan satisfied with a low standard? I ask this to all of the Mcnabb fans who get so upset when his play on the field is question. dwaynem

I think Lonewolf is referring to the "broken ankle" game a few years back. Not last years reg season game. He was essentially a pocket passer in that game because he could not move! (And the O-line could protect him better because they knew where he was on the field) He has come up small in the BIG GAMES. That is not even debatable. The question is WHY ? BIGWILLIE3367
I do understand its a free country. The point I am trying to make to you is simply this. A WARRIOR FIGHTING FOR THEIR LIFE AND SOMEONE PLAYING A GAME IS NOT THE SAME. I THINK MCNABB HIMSELF WOULD SAY THAT. TO ME THATS DIFFERENT BUT HEY I AM DIFFERENT. ALL I WAS TRYING TO SAY IT HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY TO EXPLAIN YOUR POINT. BUT I WAS WRONG AND FOR THAT I AM VERY SORRY. dwaynem

Look, I'm not a McNabb lover or hater, he is a good QB, I think most feel that way. He is NOT a great QB, if he were a great one he wouldn't bury screen passes 5 yards short in the turf or overthrow sideline attempts! As I said, he's good, he needs to cut way down on his misses to be great. Yes, I'll chear just as loud or louder as all of you if he brings the Birds a title, he just hasn't done it yet. I also think that this years group will be the most talented team that he has had surrounding him, let's hope that it transfers over to the playing field. Just remember a lot of these players are new and will more than likely need a few games to get used to the systems that the Iggles play. I can see them getting 10 wins without a big problem, but of course I'd be happier with 12. Yes, I'm very optimistic, so shoot me!!! FireChief
dwaynem a servive member is not soem mythical beast they are just people. An athlete is not some magical creature they are just people like everyone else. If you can not respect a person who gives their all in a moments time then what can you respect? Money aside and fame aside the man gave everything and left it out there on the field I can respect that and a lot of my comrades can respect that. I do not know what kind of unit you where in dwaynem but in my unit we go balls out and have a high level of respect for those who do as well(even the enemy). I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it
Charles Barkley is a walking mound of lard with a lot of hot air. Regardless, GO EAGLES!!! SayHello2MyLittleFriend
Here's a prediction for the Eagles this year (barring any catosprophic injuries) 13-3. One of the losses will probably be against the redskins (they always play the eagles tough) and the other two will come from out of the conference. Everything seems to be in place for the Eagles to do it. they have a backup in McCoy, wideouts have been addresses (maclin, ingram) they tightened up the O-Line, and minimal losses on the defensive side. komplex2005
remarks by --Rod Speiss, Reading, Pa. I'm originally from Reading. I know how "open-minded" people from Reading are LOL!!! The Phillies seem to get into the WS about once every 10-15 years. I'd like them to be in it more frequently than 1-15 or 1-12. Winning the WS would be a lot more fun done more often. I'm here in Yankee land and have to hear about those 26 championships about every 26 minutes. As an Eagle fan, being in contention every year and winning here and there is far better than being the 81-90's Eagles fans (I'd take McNabb succession of Detmers, Pederson's McMahon's any day) As a person living in Giant's country, if they had the same success as the Yankees over the years, I'd have to have shot myself by now. RichieAllen64
Charles makes news...big or small....it is written aabout....but bottom line who cares....he left us and goes into the hall not as a 76er....bad idea....he is no longer Philly......he may be charming but he left us.......not the other way around... nuggett
remember back in the day when he beat the redskins by himself and accounted for 90% of the offense including 125 yards rushing. Don't forget he was a one man wrecking crew, injuries and age have made him a pocket passer but i think he is still has a highlight reel playoff game left in him. If he can't do it, it can't be done. jwood- Like I've said before, last year's NFC Championship cannot be used as a reason to knock McNabb. I'm still waiting for an article that reminds everyone that the defense simply couldn't make a stop in the last 6 or 7 minutes (maybe more?). That's why I don't get wrapped up in anyone who wants to pin that loss on him. I bet Jim Kelly thanks the man above every day that online commenting wasn't so popular during his playing days...
In answer to "I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it" comments about all of us not ever playing on a high level... We follow sports because we don't HAVE TO play at that high level--- we have these highly paid guys to get their brains bashed in FOR US. Nothing wrong with working at Dunkin unless you're a cop, and workin' and getting the donuts on the job. Pass the donuts! In effect, we paid for these salaries, that nickle is on us (it's more like a silver dollar these days.) RichieAllen64
I'll keep saying this 'til training camp starts: This is as good a roster as the Iggles have ever had....but right now it's just a collection of players, not yet a team. Let's see what we got here when the whistle for the first regular season game trills. TBear
I am still waiting for the Mcnabb fans to tell me what is the bar for an eagle QB. Is it NFC championship game or bust. Lol... I do have to agree with one thing. The history for eagles QB's is not great. Lol... I mean when you come in as a QB for the 49ers,Dallas,Steelers,Colts,Packers,Redskins,ect... you are getting compared to QB's that have championships. But no QB and I do mean no QB has as many NFC championship games in eagle history than Mcnabb. So I will say he is the G.O.A.T.(GREATEST OF ALL TMIES)in eagle history. For the Mcnabb fans if that is good enough for you its good enough for me. Looooooooooooosers. Lol...... dwaynem
RichieAllen64 to use the "we pay for these salaries" is a lame excuse. What profession out there doesn't have people pay for their salaries? Name 1? What ever you do somebody has to buy it so in essence that customer pays your salary. You follow you nitwit. You also unknowingly emphasized my point that most people have never played sports at a high level after high school. So thanks. Also I never said that working at Dunkin Donuts was a bad thing what I said is that lonewolf works at there and is always complaining so I offered him an alternative. Everyday all lonewolf does is yap yap yap on this blog and yap yap yap every morning while ringing up my coffee and donuts. So I offered him a chance to man up and I offer the rest of you to man up as well. REAL MEN SERVE AND DON'T COMPLAIN! I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it
THE OFFICAL REIGN OF "I WOULD HAVE TAKEN ANOTHER NAME BUT LONEWOLF BEAT ME TO IT" HAS BEGUN. AS I HAVE SHUT UP LONEWOLF, PANTHRO22, VOYTAS, THE PHILLIES WON THE WORLD SERIS & NO ONE NEEDED TO STOP & PUKE,RICHIEALLEN64, & DWAYNEM! LET FREEDOM RING! GO EAGLES! I would have taken another name but lonewolf beat me to it
I love Donovan 80% of the time and hate him 20% of the time, give or take. It depends on what he's doing and what kind of day I'm having. Regardless, I wouldn't trade him. rwright611

Yea, by the way last year in the Nfl championship game Mcnabb lead a game winning drive and the defense game up 7 points right back.. So Donovan had to try to lead another drive down the field which ended with a questionable no PI call.. Keep talking about the rings and stuff but look at what Mcnabb has done with this franchise... Before he took over how good were we again? I just dont understand how every loss gets blamed on him? He is a very good qb how don't some of you people see that? Especially considering he does not throw interceptions that often... He does have his slow starts as of late but he gets the offense going.. Going by his stats there is no justification to say he is not one of/ if not the best qb in eagles history... People need to just stop hating and give him some credit.. rjg2424

Someone out here declares in their handle that lonewolf beat him/her to it. Now there's an accomplishment! What do you have? I know lonewolf has his odd opinions (in my view, strictly) but everyone is entitled to one (at least!). cleansports
Lonewolf4, I obviously never even seen Van-Brocklin or Jurgenson play but Van-Brocklin only had 3 season in an eagles uniform and Jurgenson only started for 3 years as the Eagles QB and the last one he was hurt all the time... so how is that relevant? Your biggest arguement is about rings, how many did Cunningham have? any more than McNabb? Seems like you really are just a McNabb hater... rjg2424
agreed rjg, jurgenson, van brocklin, cunningham? Really? I mean even Jaws you can throw out he was here a while. Never saw Jurgenson and Van Brocklin but playing three years and winning a title 50 years ago doesnt seem to me like it puts you at the top of even a short Eagles list. jwood

The losers who talk about Mcnabb puking in the super Bowl did u forget that on the alleged drive that happened he threw a TD to Greg Lewis and threw for over 350 yds, he was not gutless or overmatched Get a clue Lonewolf, Voytas and th e puke loser guy. It was Mcnabb 's fault that hank Fraley was gettign beat on everyplay by Seymour, the defense coundnt make the stops in the 2nd half and LJ Smith couldnt hold on to the ball. Bottom Line Genuius's Mcnabb is the best shot for the Super Bowl. Tell me right now who can step that is available that will do a better job then Mcnabb. get a clue you negative miserable lowlives, it must to have been raised by a pack of wolves. xivitale22- Iwouldhaveateadonutbutafatkidbeatmetoit....STFU!!! Mcnabb will do the thing with the upgrades on offense.
