Yankees take World Series with 7-3 win over Phillies in Game 6

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees have won the World Series, beating the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 behind Hideki Matsui's record-tying six RBIs.

Andy Pettitte won the clincher Wednesday night, pitching the Yankees to their elusive 27th championship and first since 2000.

Matsui homered, doubled and singled, and tied Bobby Richardson's 49-year-old record for RBIs in a Series game. His two-run homer off Pedro Martinez in the second inning started the Yankees on their way.

Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez helped the Yankees wrap up a most successful season in their first year at the new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium.

The difference in the series was clutch hitting. The yankees had it and the Phils didn't. We had too many opportunities to knock a pitcher out of the game and didn't come through. I'm still not sure why Feliz was batting 7th instead of Ruiz. That alone may have cost us tonights game

Yea because Howard didn't help us get to the WS or anything. This series was lost cause the Phils didn't have their A game and the two pitchers who carried us last year let us down this year in the WS.

Phillies need to get rid of their hitting and pitching coaches. The pitching fell apart after mid season and the hitting slumps persisted. That is the job of coaches to correct. I also wish Charlie would retire. His faith in the 2008 team didn't work in 2009. That was insanity. Next season he will STILL be living in 2008 and we will be sunk before the June.

Great year Phils..thanks for an exciting season. I'm proud to call myself a fan. Sadly, the bats just weren't as hot as usual tonight and the pitching once again let us down....same old same old with the Phils. Doesn't matter what year it is...it's the pitching, damn it.

Congrats to Andy Pettite and A-Rod. Way to overcome cheating and to win a World Series. Congrats to the media for fair coverage of both players. Angelo C...Enjoy your Yankees championship, you total non-talented loser.

guys dont look at it so bad.i mean everyone outside new york city knows damn well that george steinbrener and jerry jones are both all about the money.theyll buy the world series any way they can.and besides that our title last year wasnt tainted.it is with a- rod and pettite and their steroids they took.and just like barry bonds it will come back to haunt them.hang high we will be back.

Good year, in the hardest sport to repeat in, the Phils came close. Shame for the real Yankees fans, that they can't afford tickets to that overpriced hedge-fund of a stadium up there.
