For some, the fact that Michael Vick is still a Philadelphia Eagle is more surprising than Donovan McNabb now playing for the Washington Redskins.

Even Vick, now the Eagles backup quarterback to Kevin Kolb, said he was initially surprised.

“I was surprised in the beginning,” Vick said about not being traded. “But after the smoke cleared, I just thought about it and talked it over with my family and I just said, ‘I’m blessed to have a job in the NFL.’”

Still, Vick had been very adament this off-season about wanting to return to starting. He went on several radio shows in a sort-of campaign to get a job with a different team. But it didn't work. Even though the Eagles said they were entertaining offers for all three of their quarterbacks, they didn't receive a serious sniff from any other teams.

So now that he's back, is Vick content with being just the No. 2 guy?

"I'm just going to continue to get better, continue to work hard," Vick said Friday after the first day of minicamp. "That's my role here. I just want to help this team win a championship."

Vick will earn $5.25 million in the last year of a two-year contract he signed with the Eagles last August after he was released from an 18-month prison term. Is he hoping that perhaps next year he can get another opportunity to start?

"Whatever happens happens," Vick said. "I can't predict the future. All I can do is control what I can control and hopefully put myself in a position where maybe I can start in this league."

Vick's role with the Eagles is more important that your customary backup. He'll still likely be a part of the Eagles' Wildcat package.

"I think we'll still have part of the Wildcat package," Vick said. "I think we'll still be able to mix in some things at times."

A slimmer Vick said that he was able to drop five or so pounds in the off-season, and now weighs around 207 pounds -- his normal playing weight. He said he's also down to 4 percent body fat.

"During the season I fluctuated in between 211 and 213," Vick said. "But just to be at a consistent 205, 207, like I used to be, and having a chance to add on more muscle was an important goal for me this off-season."

He thinks he's got the old motor back.

"I was really more quick than I was fast," Vick said. "I think some people failed to realize that. My ability was to get away with that initial burst. I feel like I got that back."

Vick just doesn't pass well enough to start for the pass happy Eagles offense. Once they made McNabb decision and nobody offered much for Vick, Birds stuck with him for another year. If Eagles ever get a decent offer this preseason or during the season, they make the trade. Plenty of veteran back-ups available until we find out of Kafka is a viable backup option next year. No way Vick back here in 2011.

Andy Reid is trying to teach an OLD DOG some NEW TRICKS with Michael Vick -pardon the pun. No question, Vick is a marvelous athlete. He proved in Atlanta that he was not a leader / mentor. Can he add anything to Philly except controversy? He doesn't seem to be worth the paycheck as he isn't a reliable WCO QB...

I wish people stop being disrespectful about Vick's dogfighting. It was a MISTAKE WE ALL MAKE'EM NOW STOP BEING DISRESPECETFUL... GET A LIFE I don't see none of y'all sports people that comment on what happens in [a] the [Big] National League. I'm 14 and I can be a little more respectful than y'all. Stop making fun of his dogfighting mistake and turning it into a statement to why teams don't want him. He is a human being like YOU AND ME. He's just a normal person like YOU AND ME. Have some damn respect.

I hope Kolb doesn't get hurt. If Vick is forced to start, the McNabb haters' heads will explode when they see #7's inaccuracy.

Get rid of him---MOVE HIM !!! A left handed QB, more inaccurate then BOZO, move him and get Garcia in to Backup and tutor the 2 young one's.

I'm so glad he's ok with it. Maybe we should run the plays by him too just to make sure he's ok with those also.

Somebody will go down in the next couple of months and a team will spend a draft pick to take Vick off their hands. Let the third Jeff Garcia era commence!

Okay back up, that will last about one or two games. I will bet that had Vick not been there to play that role as "back up" you would still have McNabb.

When an interview is interviewing a person and they ask that person a question, they expect an answer, that is what was happening with Vick, he was asked the questions about his desire to start with a team, what team would like to play for etc. He (Vick) asnwered those questions, I want to know from these reporters who are suggesting that Vick was on a campaign for another team, what did they him just to sit there and not say anything or sit there and say nothing. My guess is whatever he did, there would have been something made out of it.

Vick is a horrible teammate and worse as a person. Please cut this cancer out of the team before it kills our season. Send him to Washington with his buddy for a pizza and a six pack.

Vick stinks. Always has, always will. The market has spoken, and there are no takers. He deserves no respect.
