Two Pa. golf courses ranked among top 10 in the world

On Friday, Golf.com published its list of the top 100 golf courses in the world, and two Pennsylvania courses cracked the top 10, but their inclusion in the list was certainly not a surprise - although the order may be.

Coming in at number nine was Merion East, which hosted the U.S. Open this past June.

One spot ahead of Merion was Oakmont, located on the other side of the state outside Pittsburgh. Oakmont has hosted its fair share of major golf tournaments in the past, including the 2007 U.S. Open, and is scheduled to host the 2016 Open.

Golf.com also published a list of the top 100 courses in the United States. While Merion and Oakmot were the lone Pennsylvania courses on the international list, a few others cracked this one.

Fox Chapel in Pittsburgh was ranked 88th, while Newton Square's Aronimink came in at No. 82.

Aronimink was a newcomer in 2013, and here's what Golf.com had to say about the course:

Set into a rolling, wooded tract in suburban Philadelphia, Donald Ross's Aronimink rose to prominence after hosting the 1962 PGA, won by Gary Player. A series of ill-conceived alterations subsequently destroyed much of the Ross character, until a spot-on restoration by Ron Prichard in 2003 righted the ship.

Several courses in New Jersey also found their way onto the list, including the world's top-ranked course.

As it does most years, Pine Valley claimed the top spot.

Here's a look at all the Pennsylvania and New Jersey courses that cracked the top 100 lists:
