Sources: Vick likely for 49ers

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is likely to play Sunday against the 49ers despite a deep bone bruise in his right hand, team sources said Tuesday.
If the swelling in his non-throwing hand decreases and he is cleared to play by a doctor, Vick will start for the second straight week in spite of injury. He suffered a concussion against the Falcons on Sept. 18, but passed evaluations the following days and was in the lineup on Sunday against the Giants.
Vick injured his hand in the third quarter when Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty hit him after he threw a pass. He stayed in for the rest of the drive, but left shortly thereafter for x-rays. The original x-ray was negative, the Eagles said, so Vick re-entered the game. However, when a second x-ray revealed a hairline fracture Vick was pulled, according to the team.
On Monday, Andy Reid said that Vick's hand was not broken and that it was bruised. The Eagles coach said a blood vessel made it appear on the x-ray that there was a break. Vick later called the injury a "deep bone bruise." Reid said the swelling had to go down before the Eagles would consider who was starting at quarterback Sunday.
If Vick isn't able to go, Vince Young and Mike Kafka are the two other options. Young, listed No. 2 on the depth chart, didn't dress for the first two games of the season because of a hamstring strain. He was active against the Giants, but when Vick left, Kafka was called upon.
Kafka threw an interception on his first throw, though, and looked shaky the rest of the way. Reid said Young wasn't 100 percent last week, but it appears likely he would be the choice ahead of Kafka if Vick was held back.

Of course Vick will play...he only has a little bruise on his non-throwing hand...Tony Romo played with broken ribs PLUS a punctured lung...the Jets Sanchez will play this week with a broken nose...this is the NFL, all players play with injuries. frank105

Although I am somewhat concerned, i am not totally frustrated as it is still early in the season. I'd rather the team go thru all this turmoil early in the season than later in the season. There is still time to right the ship. Most team that start out fast out of the gate usually end up faltering at the end. This happened to the Eagles last year. They will get better, but it hinges on the defense improving and not so much on the offense. The offense will be fine, but the defense is what scares me, especially the pass defense with the $100 million dollar defensive backfield. It's taking time to jell, but they will as the season goes on. Just hope that the Eagles can hold serve until they get their feet under them. will50

Comment removed.- This is a fact. The Eagles outplayed both the falcons and Giants and shot themselves in the foot. Give them this week to gel and focus up because you better bet they are coming out firing and hopefully start rolling through teams. Its only week 3 and we have seen the good and bad that this team brings. Week 4 is all good!
bettermurph - Well, the Niners are not a gimme because unfortunately, their strengths align with our weaknesses. We need this one bad, though, so I suspect that at the very least the full effort and concentration will be there.

The defense has to man up and play with an attitude. We are very good at tackling each other, now it's time to start tackling the other team. LB's need to stop "dancin" with the O-lines, fight off their blocks and punch somebody in the mouth. If the D shows up I believe we can win with either Vick or Kafka. NC Eagle Fan

Awww. That's great news. I hope he doesn't get banged up again. jfo12- hopefully Vick will play so the end of his great Philly experience will be that much closer. I believe in youth in Asia so hopefully the 49'ers will put him out of his misery.
jwatson - Jwatson... Are you kidding me?? "Youth in Asia"- what are you, illiterate? The proper term is Euthanasia. Lol- your comment is the joke of the day.
