Shero not voted into Hall of Fame

POSTED: Tuesday, June 26, 2012, 3:06 PM

Former Flyers coach Fred Shero was not elected into this year's Hockey Hall of Fame class.

Shero led the Flyers to their two Stanley Cups in 1974-75.

Four players were named on Tuesday: Joe Sakic, Adam Oates, Mats Sundin and Pavel Bure. Oates played 14 games for the Flyers in 2001-02, scoring three goals and seven assists.

Frank Seravalli made his case for Shero's induction in today's Daily News. CLICK HERE to read his toughts on Shero's Hall of Fame credentials.

Wilhelm, your name says it all. Your post is a vitriolic cry of blatant bigotry. Your hatred of Mr. Ed Snyder has nothing to do with this article, nothing to do with Flyers hockey and nothing to do with civilized decourse. Go back into the basement with the rest of the Neo Nazi turds in your cell.

@advanta and DRat....excellent posts. There is no logic to explain why Fred is NOT in the HOF already. There are just too many reasons for him to be in there. There has to be some behind the scenes issue that is the reason for him being blackballed like this. Perhaps we'll never know. Was he the guy on the grassy knoll 10 year earlier??????

As a Flyer fan, who cares? Freddy the Frog is the ONLY Flyer coach to raise the cup. As far as I'm concerned, he is the man. I was a youngster back then, but man oh man, those Broad Street Bullies were THE team for the ages. They had some great skill players, the best goalie, and the best cast of hockey character except for those in slapshot. I could on and on on how those guys, lead by Freddy, earned my respect, loyalty, and of course, made me a life-long hockey fan.

The exclusion of Shero — who coached consecutive Stanley Cup winners in Philadelphia in 1974-75 in the franchise’s seventh and eighth seasons in the NHL; who was the first NHL coach to hire a full-time assistant; who was the first NHL coach to visit the Soviet Union and incorporate systems he learned watching the Red Army practice; who finished his coaching career with a .612 winning percentage and four trips to the finals in nine full seasons behind the bench — is inexcusable. Shero was never part of the good old boys club, never was a politician. Had few cronies. Marched to the beat of his own drummer. Had a relatively short NHL career due largely to a disease he could not beat. But he was one of the great coaches in the history of the league, one of the most successful and one of the most innovative. He had a Hall of Fame career behind the bench. Shame on the Hall of Fame selection committee. http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/islanders/enshrine_shero_already_ax7OstToM3NjEwummlpi5J

But that all-time loser, Mr. Snider, bought his way in. The "Fog" needn't be associated with a fake, phoney, fraud, mysogonist, crook like Ed snider.

Back to back winner of the Stanley Cup, with a third straight denied with their #1 goalie, Bernie, injured for the majority of the season.....introducing an innovative and modified version of the Soviet ice hockey system to the NHL........the first to have an assistant coach on the bench.......coach of some of the greatest NHL players ever to lace up the skates.........If it weren't for Fred Shero, Keith Allen, Ed Snider and that wonderful cast of players, the NHL most likely would have withered on the vine and become not unlike box lacrosse and arena football. The Flyers and Shero elevated the NHL to a must see event. 17007 fans every single night agreed.

2 final thoughts: Keith Allen is in the Hockey Hall of Fame for his contributions as GM in those heady Stanley Cup years, why is not Freddie? And my final thought: maybe the Hockey Hall of Fame should review the tapes of that parade the city held for the 1974 Stanley Cup Champs. No matter how long this disrespect continues, we will always have Freddy and his team forever in our hearts...... Win today and we walk together, forever, indeed, Freddy!

Not taking anything away from the four players selected, Freddie the Fog should be in the HOF. What is the matter with those turkeys?

Toyota dealer is a career success at ripping people off with his bloated listing price, then ripping them off again by underpaying for their trade in, then ripping them off a third time with his over priced financing, and giving them the shaft a fourth time with unneeded extended extended warranties.

Shame that Fred Shero was not selected-we Flyers' fans know what he did to restore a championship feeling here as well as for US and Canada when he beat the Russians at their own game-too bad the Hall of Fame voters don't recognize him for his overall genius and new dimension he brought to the game of hockey!!!

apparently Shanahan was a lock to get in and did not. I think Big E will make it eventually, but he will also slowly get pushed to the bottom of the pile. let's also not forget that this is the Hockey HOF and not the NHL HOF. there are others out there not affiliated with the league that are being considered.

I'm not so sure. It's a close call. He obviously had success in the NHL for a little over nine years, but when compared to others he has a lot of competition.

I really don't care for the HOF because the voting process is so politicized. People decide whom they'd like to see enter and then develop all sorts of subjective arguments coupled with cherry-picked data to make their case. I'm not singling out anyone favoring the Fog here (I'd like to see him get in, too), but calling the process horse dung. We have so much information available at our fingertips that it's too bad an interactive museum that permits people to learn about the history of hockey without being limited to only those who survived the campaign. All HOF voting does in any sport is create angst and bad feelings, and creates a country club atmosphere where a person's career is validated by getting the most voters to "like" you. They can have it.

Lindros absolutely should have been elected -- much more dominant and much more a part of NHL history than the 4 selected

Eric will never be inducted because he never won a Cup.
In his only finals appearance against the Red Wings in 1997 the Flyers were swept four straight. Eric scored one goal in the entire series, with 20 seconds left in game 4.
Shero definitely deserves to be in, back-to-back Stanley Cups. But there is an "old school" group that hates him for the nasty style the Flyers used...they will never forgive him.

just more anti-Flyer and anti-Broad Street Bully sentiment, a full 40 years after the fact. This guy took his team and they did the impossible. The Original Six teams had a lock on league supremacy that people thought would last another decade or two. Then the Flyers broke though after just six seasons in the league and shocked them all in 73 - 74.

And then they did it again in 74-75. Fred Shero was the architect of this achievement and deserves enshrinement as much as any coach around.

Even now, after all this time, the league has its head in the sand over what transpired then. They resented that the Flyers were so tough, but in years prior, when it was the Bruins that ruled the league with an iron fist, no one minded. Fred Shero's sin is that his team did it better than the others did.
