Should the Phillies sign Pedro Martinez?
Yes
No

Whatever happens over the next week, the Phillies have already won three times as many games on this homestand as they did on their previous one. But with very winnable series against the Reds and the Pirates standing in between now and the All-Star Break, they won't be satisfied with a mediocre homestand that fails to add to their one-game lead in the NL East.

I know the recent revival of Jimmy Rollins is an encouraging sign -- Rollins went 7-for-15 and hit a leadoff home run in yesterday's win -- but the biggest key in this recent three-game sweep of the Mets was the starting pitching.

Now, the question is whether the three straight quality starts and victories by Rodrigo Lopez, Jamie Moyer and Joe Blanton were just a brief reprieve from the rotation's struggles, or if the unit might finally find some consistency.

A source familiar with the Phillies' thinking said today that the organization has had talks about free agent righthander Pedro Martinez over the last couple of weeks, and that the team has not ruled out adding the veteran righthander. Earlier this season, the team did not consider Martinez a viable option, given questions about his performance as well as a price tag that several media outlets reported to be in the $5 million range. But internal discussions about the future Hall of Famer have intensified since last month, and the Phillies are currently one of several teams who are hoping to see him pitch in the near future.

That said, the Phillies by no means view Martinez as a panacea for the rotation. And a number of hurdles would have to be cleared for him to be considered a serious option. First, the Phillies would have to decide that Martinez is pitching well enough to represent an upgrade over Rodrigo Lopez or the prospects the team could consider for the fifth spot in the rotation. Second, Martinez's asking price would have to jive with the Phillies' summation of his talent. Third, Martinez would have to want to pitch in Philadelphia.

Keep in mind the Phillies scouted Freddy Garcia last season, but never came close to signing him. But at least for now, the possibility of Martinez is there.

Here are the probable pitching match-ups for the final seven games:

Tonight vs. Reds: LHP Cole Hamels vs. RHP Johnny Cueto

Tomorrow vs. Reds: LHP J.A. Happ vs. RHP Aaaron Harang

Wed. vs Reds: RHP Rodrigo Lopez vs. RHP Homer Bailey

Thu. vs. Reds: LHP Jamie Moyer vs. RHP Micah Owings

Fri vs. Pirates: RHP Joe Blanton vs. LHP Zach Duke

Sat. vs. Pirates: LHP Cole Hamels vs. RHP Ross Ohlendorf

Sun. vs. Pirates: LHP J.A. Happ vs. RHP Virgil Vasquez

I found it interesting that Ryan Braun called out his starting pitchers after the Brewers' loss to the Cubs yesterday.

"No matter who is in there, we have to find a way to throw the ball better for us to have success," Braun said, accoridng to the Associated Press. "I think when you're constantly behind in games, it's not easy and it's not fun. Their starting pitcher was clearly better than ours this series."

Brewers starters are 14th in the National League with a 4.99 ERA. Phillies starters are 15th with a 5.09 ERA.

From my point of view, this drives home how difficult the trade market will be this month. Of the six teams with the worst starting ERAs, four harbor serious playoff aspirations: the Brewers, the Mets, the Marlins and the Phillies. While Florida probably won't be a serious competitor for a starter, the Mets and Brewers could. I still think something will happen. The way I look at it, the Phillies have the most to gain and the most to lose by either acquiring or not acquiring a starter. Therefore, I think they will be in a position to be more aggressive than any of the other teams. For now, though, we'll just have to wait and see.

Pedro's done. If the Phillies are going to make a stretch move better to consider a competent bench player who can make a difference when pinch hitting, as well as fill in at 2nd or shortstop. Next move would be to send Bruntlett down to the islands to keep Pedro company.

He is a name and that is it. He is not the Pedro of old and he is a waste of money.

Just wait until he's pitching to his fellow Dominicans on the Mets and he's in a crouch on the mound watching Delgado taking him deep in CBP!

Hmmm, so Raiderfan is willing to sit through really, really bad football but not really, really bad baseball? I would think you'd get used to your team overpaying players if you root for the Raiders, lol. The team is still in first place though...despite Romero being out 50 games, despite Lidge being hurt and off his game, despite Ibanez being hurt, despite Myers being done for the year, despite Rollins being in a horrendous slump all year. For anyone to make some sort of blanket statement that they are going to stop following a 1st place team because of someone they sign to be a 5th starter is ridiculous. I'm sure Amaro will think twice about signing Martinez if he knows Raiderfan might quit following the team.

Big Earn, thank you for NOT reading what I wrote before sharing your totally inane comment. I really appreciate it. Also (a) what is a 4 for 4? and (b)Is that a person who enjoys throwing good, hard earned money at a team that makes questionable decisions that will push them further away from a championship instead of closer to it? If that is what it means, I'm sorry but that's not me. I love the Phillies and have for awhile, but I refuse to spend money that I don't really have to support any franchise that is basically ripping me off with questionable personnel decisions and bad play. That's why I haven't bought a ticket for the Eagles or Sixers in years. I tend to vote with my wallet. I think everyone should. If the Phillies were losing games because of injuries or plain old bad luck, I'd continue to sit in Citizens Bank Park because I know it would eventually turn around. But if the Phillies start losing games because they do dumb things like spend 5 cents on Pedro Martinez, my ticket money will remain in my pocket. I'll miss the chili at Harry the K's, but I'm not going to help the Phillies pay for the team's destruction.

so far giving our prospects a shot has won us 10 games 9against 4 losses). Prospects doesn't mean A level kids, but AAA people. If Carlos, Bastardo, Carpenter etc aren't ready to be called up yet, what have they been doing all these years? Whether they are good enough for teh big leagues is a different issue, but they had beeter be ready mentally by now. The only reason to have minor leaguers is to help the big team when needed--they are not there to help the minor league teams

I say ABSOLUTELY! Pedro could be a huge weapon coming out of the pen. He sure the h4ll is better than Durbin or Condrey (and trust me, I appreciate both of those guys). Not as a starter, but definitely a 1 inning guy. He still has that nasty offspeed. He could be very effective in the high 80's low 90's for 1 inn with that nasty deuce and change up

Not my money, and dont have to give anything up to get him. Just don't feel like you have to play him if he sucks it up bad.

Vacancy for peanut vendor in section 114. IF Pedro can learn the signals, move up and down steps quickly enough, toss overhand and pace himself for a complete game, we should give him a tryout. Otherwise, NADA.

I would rather give one of our prospects a shot...or even burn a few million dollars than give it to Pedro!

RAUUUL!!
The Phillies definitely need to get a starter that can give you a lot of innings. I just don't think Pedro is the answer, but I also don't think that what they have now is sufficient. Could they still get someone like Dan Haren, Gil Meche, or Jason Marquis? If it is a matter of giving up prospects, I say go for it. The future is now. Build a dynasty.

Nice work, Jack V. That's a 200-word article, tops, yet you couldn't be bothered to read it before offering a comment. Beautiful. BTW, beagle, "panacea" doesn't mean "remedy." It means "cure-all," and really was exactly the right word in this context.

Is Marquis even available? The Rockies are back in the playoff picture, so why would they get rid of a pitcher? We have to remember that there has to be a willing trade partner. And it doesn't sound like there are many. It may change by month's end - but as of now, too many teams are in the thick of it. There's no harm in taking a look at Martinez. And I disagree with anyone who would rather 'give one of the prospects a shot' - that's flawed thinking. I would rather have a proven veteran any day, plus you risk doing harm to a guy's progress if you bring him up and he ends up getting hit all over the place. If we were in the middle of rebuilding, giving prospects "a shot" is ok, but not when you are trying to repeat.

Listen guys, the Phillies, like Murph said, are doing their homework. How about if Pedro turns out to be throwing pretty good and the scouts like what they are seeing. I rather see him for a few starts at a reasonable price than send a few prospects for a Brian Bannister or Aaron Harang. The guy pitched in the Classic in February and was pretty good. It won't hurt to take a look. There are not many options and the pitcher most people keep talking about, Marquis, is going to cost more now the he has an All Star in his resume.

PhilCali: But, the wunderkin Amaro cut his teeth under Ed Wade. What would you expect from him? If this deal goes through, Amaro should be grounded to his room, after Pat Gillick turns him over his knee, spanks him, and sends him to bed without dinner.

Raiderfan, go away. How can you be so contradictive? I only want 4 for 4's on my wagon anyway. F the Raiders in the A. Pedro thinks your team stinks.

The Mets aren't going to add a pitcher before they add a bat. The rumors of Holiday going to Queens are out there, but I thought he wanted to stay away from New York. The Marlins would likely go with a bat as well. Thier pitching seems pretty set. The Phillies may be the only team in the NL east to add to their rotation before the deadline. If they make a smart move here, the return of Ibanez would be like adding another bat, and the Phils will look pretty good.

Yo, Murph - I have to say, there is absolutely NO desire, in MY heart, to bring in this prima donna who has been nothing more than a BIG NAME over the past few years. Let him go to the Hall of Fame without EVER wearing my PHILLIES' uniform. Isn't it bad enough that he already played for the Mets? Let's not make hat mistake, PLEASE! Second, one of my pet peeves involves the English language and its usage...Please don't use "jive" when the correct word, in this instance, is "jibe." You have to be better than that if you want to write professionally. PK

Bring them up from within, The Guys they have brought up the past seem to be doing okay - I like it when their home grown, it's easier on the purse strings too. People act as if they have been doing Horrible. They have been in first most of the season. Yeah, it seems to me like they have benn coasting ( or at least some of them ), and that can come back to bite ya, but they have been in first most of the season

Hey I say give him a shot, best case scenario he still has some stuff left and in a short series in the playoffs he becames extremely important, and if not well than you wasted 5 million and maybe got a few starts out of him, its probably not the best answer but its low risk

Pedro is asking for 5 million, I think to pay him any more than $5K is paying him too much. The guys the Phillies need to go after is Paul Byrd.

Guys, keep in mind that the front office "discusses" just about everyone who is out there. Nothing I have heard throughout this season suggests that the organizaton views Martinez as a likely possibility. That said, the chances sound as if they have grown over the past couple weeks. The Phillies are doing their homework, as are a handful of other teams.

Uncle Eddie, I pay little attention to the Eagles and I think that the Raiders will get their act together once Al Davis passes away and the team gets some ownership that isn't totally insane. But I still stand by my assessment of the possibility of the Phillies adding Pedro Martinez. I used to cover the Phillies in the late 90s and got paid to sit through some really, really bad baseball. I, therefore, refuse to spend my money to sit through some really, really bad baseball, a year removed from a World Championship or not. If Pedro Martinez were to be added to the rotation in his current form, really, really bad baseball is what we'd get every five days. If Ruben Amaro Jr. has so little respect for his squad that he'd even consider this, I'm not going to help him pay for it with my season ticket. Like I said, I expect better from this group.

No Pedro. Please allow the younger kids to show something if Rod goes south. And do not trade these arms. Because next year, two of them will be starters.

With any luck the Martinez "talks" are of the "how about' nature, where during a brainstorm session some front office lackey pipes up and says "How about Pedro Martinez?" just so the GM knows that the kid is in the meeting not just to use up oxygen.

Gotta love it when a fan says "I'm done with them" 9 months after a championship parade. You might want to direct your frustration toward a team in this city who actually deserves it, the frauds known as the Eagles. Or maybe the Raiders, as your name would indicate?

If the Phillies are stupid enough to sign Pedro Martinez, a dude that was already on the train to Washed-Up Ville when the Mets gave him all that money, I'm done with them. This is a move that the Phillies of the late 90s would make. I expect better from this group.
