UPDATE

As it turned out, the video that Jimmy Rollins taped was not played on the stadium video board, but on television. Which meant that the fans were treated to Rollins' appearance without a warmup.

When the lineups were announced before the game, there was a mix of boos and cheers.

When Rollins took the field before the game, there was pretty much silence.

When Rollins successfully fielded a ground ball in the top of the first, there were some boos.

When Rollins came to the plate in the first inning, the noise was pretty loud and, again, pretty evenly split between boos and cheers. When Rollins lined out to right field, there were boos again.

In all, a pretty big shrug.

********************************

Jimmy Rollins and the Phillies have cooked up a little surprise for the fans tonight at Citizens Bank Park. It is a video message from Rollins to the fans in the wake of his comments last week calling them "front-runners," and the resulting firestorm.

Rollins taped it in the dugout before batting practice.

"They came up and asked me if I would do it," Rollins said. "At first, I was like, 'That's pretty cheesy.' But the producer wanted to do it so I was like, 'All right, sure, whatever. I'll go along with it.' "

Asked if it was an apology, Rollins said it was not. He said, "It was, 'What do you think is going to be the reaction to your first at-bat?' "

His response, paraphrased, was apparently something on the order of: everybody has a right to their opinion, everybody has a right to cheer or boo, but in the end, everybody just wants the team to win.

Or something.

Speaking later to reporters, Rollins was unrepentant. Asked if he regretted the incident, he said, "No, not at all."

And he again talked about how booing has, in the past, affected some of his teammates to the point where "they're halfway defeated before they get up there" to the plate.

He also added that potential free agents have come up to him in the past and asked about the Philadelphia fans and said things, "Most of 'em, you can't repeat." Rollins said that players have said they don't want to put their families into this kind of situation, "That's just the truth."

That should get some play.

More later.

I guess Jimmy missed me when I went to those hundred or so games in the late 90s at that dump of a stadium to watch a team that won 65 games a year.

"Rollins said that [otential free agents] have said they don't want to put their families into this kind of situation, "That's just the truth."" That's your reality check Philly fans. Think Rollins is making this stuff up? You're crazy.

He is just digging a deeper and deeper hole! I can't believe he is telling free agents not to come here! Is this guy serious?

Chris I agree. I went to games at the Vet back when they sucked, and it wasn't cool to be at a Phillies game. There was no McFadden's back then. But I still went and cheered them on. Rollins disgusts me. I'm not sure I am going to go to another Phillies game as long as he is on the team.

Hey Jim C. get up off your knees while you worship these cry babies and maybe you'll see the reality the slacker sports hero. You are perfect example of a sicko-phantic whose does anything to appease players who look for the easy way. Jimmy might be having an off year but we all pay attention to his LACK of attention. It is a man with little integrity and few ideas that blames his lack of effort on others.

this is pathetic. j-roll needs to learn how to swallow his pride. if he had just apologized the day after on TBDSSE instead of trying to "clarify" his remarks, this would all be dead. j-roll is officially a punk & as he said, "you can't be no punk in philly". and if you let fans half-defeat you before you get to the plate, your not a professional & i dont want you on our team

and in regards to the free agent comment: j-roll is just digging deeper & deeper to try to prove his point. there isnt a single player who would turn down philly if they were offering top dollar.

scars73, that's not at all what he said. He did not say he's telling potential free agents not to come here. Reading is fundamental.

So Rollins thinks booing your own teams players before they even did anything in a game is not cool. Hmm... sounds fair to me. You people crack me up, you'd think he said something nasty about your mother or something with all the venum spitting out in these comments.

DP hitting Rollins did not win this 100th game: wasn't that what he promised???? No, it was not Jimmy or Ryan, or Chase and Pat who won the game, it was Ridge and Werth. Is Jason Donald far behind in making this team next year???????

I wish Jimmy had kept his opinions to himself, but can anyone really argue that what he said is not true? Phillies fans are too quick to boo, and it really doesn't accomplish anything - other than to make the player feel like he and the so-called fan are opponents. I'm not sure what a fan gets out of booing - does it make him feel like he's a big man because he has the fortitude to boo? Does it prove that he is a knowledgeable and discerning fan? Is his life so miserable and empty that booing makes him feel good about himself? Does he think that a player doesn't know when he screws up?

It's no secret that a lot of players refuse to play in Philly. Remember JD Drew? OK, he's a wuss. The fans are not the whole problem. Some of the players deserve the booing, some don't. Let's face it. There are a lot of overpaid prima donnas in professional sports. Philly fans can spot them a mile away. Then of course there's the real problem. Lousy ownership. The booing is mostly misdirected anger at the clowns who own and run the team. There's no excuse for booing a guy because he didn't play well, as long as he hustles. That kind of booing probably happens more than it should here.

Anyone who booed Rollins for more than his first appearance tonight - a "gimme" boo, if you will - should quit calling him- or herself a Phils fan. The team needs to win. If it turns out Rollins really is on some campaign to leave town, I'll join you in booing him through eternity, but I think he's trying to stir the pot, get his teammates fired up about something, even something as stupid as this. Rollins' final at-bat, when he saw about 10 pitches before Werth got up and hit his home run, was one of the little keys to the game. Grow up, Philly! Get a thicker skin.

wallstreetexaminer: on jd drew, "Drew and his agent Scott Boras elected not to sign with the Phillies, sticking to their guarantee that they would not sign for less than $10 million. The Phillies had no plan to pay an unproven player this amount of money, and despite Boras' warnings, drafted Drew nonetheless." in regards to the indirected anger, i totally agree with you, well said

For all who want to be a hard@$$ and boo, please complete the following sentence: "Booing helps because..." (and keep it in relation to the play on the field, not you feeling better. If it's all about winning, then keep your comments focused on the field.)

jimmy is a freaking puss. theres no question about it. he was hailed as a god less than a year ago. did he forget that? all he has to do is play the game and people will not boo him. as for ryan howard...psh, this guy doesn't even belong in baseball. he's a joke and so overrated its ridiculous. OH BUT HES LEADING THE NL IN RBIS AND HOMERS! big whoopdee doo! he's also leading in SO's and his batting average is DISMAL. ryan howard has to be the most overrated player in sports right now.

At every level from little league, to high school, to the minor leagues most of these guys have been the best or one of the best on their teams...that's how they got to where there at. That also means they have faced a relatively small amount of criticism in their life. And if it turns out that they are the kind of player who is "half defeated" because they are getting it from the fans, then they are certainly not a professional athlete. If you can't handle the heat, you best get out of the kitchen. Booo you J-Roll for letting things get to this point. You lost a fan in me.

Fans have the right to boo, but I love that Philly fans not only think it's their right, but their obligation. And on top of that, they won't even entertain the idea that players might find it discouraging to be booed before they've even done something bad. Can anyone really argue with what Rollins actually said about free agents or players being discouraged? What should he apologize for? His opinion?

Wallstreet you have it partially right. Unfortunately you can not boo lousy ownership and general management. AND we also notice when people are not hustling. For the most part that's why we boo. Sure it happens a little more here and there and have you been to Shea when the Mets are stinkin up the place? Booing that puts ours to shame. Philly gets the short strift because that's the mythology. Rollins is no dummy he's playing to the ESPN crowd who know nothing about Philly and it commitment to teams. Rollins plays the "woe is me" game because he's having trouble at the plate. He cries to an audience that will believe that Philly doesn't appreciate him or any of his teammates. AND that is a load of BULL. With a grand total of 4 major championships in the past 40 years how would you describe the commitment of a Philly fan? Like you said we sniff the BS’ers and Rollins acting like a petulant teenager blaming the “mean old fans” for his difficulties is plain wrong. Ashburn would concur if he were here. If and when he wants to own up and man up the fans will be there like we have as long as I can remember. Until then Rollins will be lost in his own self made misery.

Pro baseball players are a bunch of P#SSIES overall, and I'm so GD sick of their "feelings". I wish for a few games a year, they could put on cletes or skates and go out and take the punishment that pro football and hockey players take. J-Roll is a d#ck for saying what he did , especially after a lackluster season.

Way to attract free agents to philly. And you wonder why Jenkins was our big splash in free angency. Great job to the media for keeping it around. Write something else this next week. It must be easy to be a sports writer in this town.

Rollins is not a guy to back down or lay down. I hope something positive comes out of this and this whole issue ticks him off and gets him fired up. It's about time he wakes up and plays like he's capable of.

JRoll appears to love the camera and the national attention more than he does Philly, Imagine if he channeled his enthusiasm for himself into enthusiasm for correcting his offensive flaws. An offseason trade is in order. Think Kansas City or Tampa where he could preen in front of 9,000 at every home game

I've always thought JRoll had a lot to say that should have been left alone--but in this case I do think he is speaking for teammates--booing someone trying is wrong IMO--JRolls tardiness and lack of hustle yes--a message to get your act together if fine--but for lack of talent-no way--Jimmy is right that they sqeeze the bat handle tighter --and you hamper what you want --for the team to be more successful--to boo to vent your own frustration is cutting off your nose to spite your face--and booing in relation to salary is nuts--not their fault they are getting too much money--thats Gillick et al--and many here keep wanting more money to be spent--and do think the players can handle a lot--but are bothered by what their kids might here--and again if I am a FA and have family--and Philly and a mid-west team offer anywhere near a similiar contract--I am going there --for my kids and my parents especially

Hey guys, any of you notice that there was a baseball game last night and not only the "Rollins, I'm an As*hole" hour? We actually won the game by sticking close and taking advantages of the other guy's mistakes. having your number 4 OF hit the game winning HR is what good teams have happen. As for "Good players not coming to Phila" those who dont' come arent that good. Anyone ever boo Dr. J? Moses Malone? Lefty? Bobby Clarke when he played? Rowland? As long as the player gives 110% he'll never be booed in Phila, win or loose

This business with Rollins will be over soon, but the person who annoyed me last night was the producer of the TV broadcast on Comcast. When Rollins came up in the first inning, instead of allowing viewers to hear and watch the fan reaction, they showed an excerpt of Rollins trying to 'splain himself to Tom McCarthy in a pregame interview. Even Harry the K seemed annoyed at that move as he reported (after the fact) on what happened when Jimmy was announced and strolled to the plate. And, nearly all the TV crowd shots focused on applauding fans.
