Road to Super Bowl goes through Philly

Want to win the Super Bowl? Play the Eagles first.

An odd trend has emerged among Super Bowl participants in recent years. Since 2010, the first team the Eagles have played at home has gone on to win the Lomabrdi Trophy, and the streak could continue in 2013.

Breaking the pattern might be as easy as squeaking out a win against the Ravens this season, 24-23. Each year prior, the Eagles have dropped the home opener to the eventual Super Bowl champion.

  1. 2009-10: New Orleans Saints beat the Eagles, 48-22, in Week 2.

  2. 2010-11: Green Bay Packers beat the Eagles, 27-20, in Week 1.

  3. 2011-12: New York Giants beat the Eagles, 29-16, in Week 3.

  4. 2012-13: Eagles beat the Baltimore Ravens, 24-23, in Week 2.

In 2008-09, the Eagles did not lose to the Super Bowl champion Steelers until their second home game, a game in which the Eagles' defense had nine sacks, as well as a safety and three turnovers.

Precious memories.

The Eagles are slated to play the Kansas City Chiefs at home next season in what will be Andy Reid's first game back at Lincoln Financial Field.

Will the NFL schedule-makers put Reid in a better position to win a Super Bowl by making that game the Birds' home opener?
