On April 1, 1985, Villanova staged one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history by defeating Georgetown, 66-64, to win the NCAA tournament championship game.

The contest was played in front of 23,000 spectators at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky.

Georgetown, which finished 30-3 and won the title the season before, was coached by John Thompson and led by center Patrick Ewing.

Villanova (25-10), coached by Rollie Massimino, won with a tremendous shooting performance. The Wildcats made 22 of 28 shots (79 percent) from the field and 22 of 27 free throws. Dwayne McClain led Villanova with 17 points. Center Ed Pinckney had 16 points. Perhaps more importantly, Pinckney and his teammates played well enough on defense so that the Hoyas hit only 29 of 53 shots, with Ewing making only 7 of 13 shots.
