The Phillies added a 12th pitcher to their roster Wednesday by recalling lefthander Raul Valdes from triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 34-year-old replaced catcher Erik Kratz on the 25-man roster.
Valdes, 34, spent nearly a month with the Phillies before his demotion and pitched in 11 games. He allowed only three earned runs in 12 2/3 innings and struck out 13 against one walk.
He was demoted almost two weeks ago because the Phillies wanted to add a righty to their bullpen. But adding Valdes makes for four lefties in the group again.
After being optioned, he continued to pitch well for the IronPigs. He struck out 10 in six innings without allowing a run.
It'll be interesting to see if Valdes pitches in higher-leverage situations during this stint, something he did not do much of last time despite his effectiveness.
Have a question? Send it to Matt Gelb's Mailbag.
If it's not considered good for position players to bounce back and forth between the minors and the big club, then how can it be good for pitchers such as Valdez to be continually jerked back and forth? MrPhillie
Hel-lo manhats!!! This is RAUL ValdeS, not WILSON ValdeZ. dwp66
Joe Savery in those situations( Phils are 0-16 in games in which Savery has appeared).........................telling stat if true

@drbob1, good point, good stats, I stand corrected regarding Diekman.
My beef wasn't with Schwimer or Qualls per se, I just used them as part of the list of guys to whom they needed to turn in late-inning, high-leverage situations when having Valdes in addition to them (as opposed to Savery) would have been a big help dealing with those games as well.
But your point and stats re: Diekman stand on merit. Thanks for the catch.

Enough said on Phillies use or misuse of pitchers. Charlie is a hitting coach/friend of Thome but he is unable to use them correctly or manage player changes. He is screwing up Mayberry by changing positions and in/out of the lineups. Why?? tulsaphil
Can you explain why considering all the great set-up men who have changed teams since July 2011, the Phillies acquired Chad Qualls? Gnip Gnop
The Tonner's just happy to have another guy to call "Exxon" now. hunglikeaton
@advantasux: You're right about Savery, but almost all of Diekmans runs were scored in one appearance on May 17, where he gave up 4 runs in 2/3 inning. In the other 10 innings he's pitched, he's given up one run. Schwimmers June ERA is 1.29. Even Qualls has pitched well in June except for one outing vs. LA where he gave up a bunch of runs. Bastardo and Papelbon have been good all year. If they can just get Savery and Kendrick off the team ( probably have to wait on KK until Halladay is healthy)they'll have a decent pitching staff. drbob1
I look for them to reacquire Zagurski once the asking price goes down. dasher
World Series!!!!!!!!!!!! Rauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuullllllllllll FABER
how typical of the genius GM and his boob manager that it was this guy that was sent down when the need for another right-hander arose two weeks back, and not Diekman or Savery. Read those stats again, folks, 2.13 ERA, scored on in but one inning out of the 13 he threw, used almost entirely in high-leverage situations when he was here.
And, still, they sent him down in favor of Scwhimer and/or Rosenberg while keeping the aforementioned lefties I listed above.
Sure enough, in the seven games that followed Valdes; demotion, Savery, Rosenberg, Schwimer and even Qualls were put into high-leverage situations in the late innings or extra innings, and each eventually cost the Phils a game.
Once again, the genius GM relies on things others than actual performance to determine his next move.
Meanwhile, this sportswriter just had the chance to ask these questions and chose (again) not to. Anything to keep his spot in line feeding at the company trough.

Charlie's use of this guy was nothing short of idiotic. He didn't use the guy for 2 innings because he said he couldn't, but Ryne Sandberg used him for 2 innings several times at LHV. He said he couldn't use him in high leverage situations, even though he was happy to use Joe Savery in those situations( Phils are 0-16 in games in which Savery has appeared.) I would criticize Amaro for sending down his 3rd best reliever( behind Papelbon and Bastardo) a couple of weeks ago, but he probably figured Manuel wouldn't miss him. If they really want to help, they should send Savery down and bring up Horst, who has done a great job for the Pigs. drbob1
Is Antonio Alfonseca available? Why not give ol' 11 Fingers a call and see if he wants to help us out. Noonan
Gonna take a lot more than Raul Valdes to straighten out this bullpen. Dragon13
Why not put him in high leverage situations? How much worse can he be than the guys they've been throwing out there? SteveS11
Phils brass will continue to explain how it's not their fault season is doomed because they did not anticipate the devastating loss of David Herndon warbiscuit
We really miss Wilson. He had the best record of last season. manyhats
