EARLIER:

The Phillies shuffled their pitching staff, purchasing the contract of Vance Worley from Double A Reading and optioning Andrew Carpenter to Triple A Lehigh Valley, a day after he was called up.

Worley, 22, was 9-4 with a 3.20 ERA in 19 starts for Reading this season. He has pitched 17 consecutive scoreless innings over his last two outings, which included his first professional shutout, a three-hitter on July 9 against Harrisburg. Worley was named the Phillies’ Minor League Pitcher of the Week today.

Carpenter, 25, allowed three runs in three innings of relief last night, coming in after Jamie Moyer was injured.

Carpenter also took a comebacker off the wrist last night.

More to come ...

So the big question is; Is Figeroa's waiver signing by Wade the first domino in the Werth to TB, propspects to Hous, Oswalt to Phils- Crazy Train ride?

So many moving pieces. Let's see where we are on August 1. In the mean time, I'll be looking for @Jay Grace's post blaming Milt Thompson or whoever he's blaming today.

Ed Wade did the same thing last year when he claimed Chris Coste off of waivers. This homegrown GM thing is not working. It failed with Wade and now it's failing again with Amaro. Time to either bring back Arbuckle or hire Kevin Towers to be the GM.

Carpenter went three yesterday, and he was heading back down by Saturday anyway. This is a move to have a long man in the pen tonight. OR, Happ is headed to Houston and Worley just skipped AAA. Either way, I can't believe they'd recall Kendrick for the weekend, even if they don't make a move.

Are they really going to start the clock on Worley to have him as the extra reliever. I'd guess this means Happ is moving and not going to be able to start Saturday or Sunday.

Got Worley's and Naylor's autographs on a ball at the Eastern League All Star game last Weds. night. Both have pitched a nine inning, three hit, complete game shutout for the R-Phils this season. Bet it is rare that two minor league pitchers have ever done that for the same team in the same season. In between Worley's previous two shutout starts he pitched an impressive seven pitch inning in the All Star game with a fastball that sat at 91-92 with change and curve balls that induced three slowly hit ground ball outs to retire the batters he faced in turn. So Worley leaves the Eastern League having pitched 18 straight shutout innings on six hits in his last three appearances.

Excited about Worley...could be a surprise in the rotation.

"igotarmyguns", you need to stop. u dont know what ur talking about. the season is so far from over its not even funny, just sit there and keep twittling your thumbs and stop. I will say if theyre bullpen doesnt shape up, they're done. The lineup, you know, at some point will pick up again, i mean theyre too good not to. but theyre bullpen has been a HUGE problem, they need at least a 4 run lead, its really bad. i almost expect them to loose when theyre up 1 going into the 9th
