The Phillies have named Pete Mackanin as their bench coach. He replaces Jimy Williams, who opted not to return after two seasons with the Phils.

Mackanin, 57, spent this past year as a pro scout for the New York Yankees after managing the Cincinnati Reds for the final 3 months of the 2007 season. The Reds went 41-39 (.513) and had the second-best record in the National League Central Division during his tenure.

In 2005, Mackanin was interim manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates for the team’s final 26 games.  He spent seven seasons on the major league coaching staffs of the Montreal Expos (third-base coach, 1997-2000) and the Pirates (bench coach, 2003-05).

Mackanin appeared in 18 games for the Phillies over the 1978 and 1979 seasons as a player during a 9-year big-league career that also included stops with Texas, Montreal and Minnesota.

With Mackanin’s hiring, Sam Perlozzo has been named the third-base coach. Perlozzo had ben hired last week to an unspecified role. He replaces Steve Smith, who was fired.

I liked Bowa as a player but as a manager he was prone to losing his cool.Players don`t respect that.Charlie may look like a country hick but he is steady and on an even keel. Many years ago I played in the minors and I would much rather have played for a Charlie than a Bowa.I played for both kinds.

Unbeleivable 29 comments on mackinin, better than taling about phantom ovetimes !! Hey Bobby D,that set also had Pete Rose's first card as a Phillie, and Topps actually painted in his Phillies cap over his Cincinnati hat !!

Wcgiles, get a clue. Why would you give any credit to Bowa? What did he do for this Phillies team, or any other Phillies team for that matter. He didn't draft, cultivate, or develop any of the players. Doubtful, IMO you're right on the money.

Charlie's biggest fault has always been that people just off the boat think that their poor pronunciation is superior to that used by families, who have lived in America for many generations. Well, that's understandable, they need to feel superior to something.

I could not agree more in regards to Ed Wade being a boob. While he was the Phils GM he did nothing but trade for stiffs like Turk Wendell and Dennis Cook, okay. And if you think about it, Ed should be be given credit for this years team winning the wrorld seires, becasue their is no way a smart GM out ther is going to gibve up a closer like Lidge for petty mcuh nothing. So thank God for Ed Wade, the biggest boob in a GM seat.

Are people on drugs? Ed Wade made one good trade and that was for a lazy, selfish player named Bobby Abreu. The homegrown talent wasn't Wade's doing. Gillick went out and got guys like Lidge, Moyer, Feliz, Dobbs....need I go on? Wade traded a future HOF for 4 stiffs. Gillick's smarts and Manuel's abily to relate to the players won the title.

I love this re-writing of history. Ed Wade is an incompetent, malignant boob. He is right where he belongs: getting fleeced by the Phillies for great players like Lidge for stiffs. Thank God Gillick took over.

I still can't believe they won the world series. I'm still in shock.

Finally, the bench coach we sorely needed is here. The Ruben Amaro era is officially underway. HOT STOVE!!!

I had an affair w/ Pete's dog when he played for the Phils in '79. I wonder if it is still around..God I hope so.

Wogles, You need to get this notion that Bowa and Ed Wade are the reason why the Philies won the title, Becasue the last time I checked neither Bowa nor Wade were in the organization when they won it right? Yes, Ed Wade should be given credit for getting players like Utley, Howard, Rolins, etc. But lets be honest here, Gillick and Mnauel did what was needed to do to bring a championsip to this town.

I don't remember much about Pete Mackanin being a Phillie other than him being part of that Topps/Burger King Phillies team set from 1979.

wcgiles and without Gillick and Charlie the Phillies wouldn't have had the sucess they have had the past few years. Wake up and smell the coffee. Bowa had the clubhouse in revolt, Wade could never pull off the trades needed to get the Phillies over the hump. If both were still here we would be lucky to finish third.

"imafanregardless" - your name says it all. blind faith. Fact is without Ed Wade and Larry Bowa, there would be no world series in Philly this year.

wcgiles- don't continue to be a fool. Ed and his staff brought in some great players, but without gillicks moves and charlie at the helm we would have no title. I love bowa, but he wasn't able to unite the players. Over a 162+ game season and 8 months of the year talent and chemistry are both key

It's Gary Varsho that was the bench coach before Jimy Williams. And you call yourself a Phillies fan.

Ksam - Let's not kid ourselves. The Phillies won this year IN SPITE of Cholly being at the helm. This was a team that Ed Wade and Larry Boat build, and Gillick and Manuel rode to success. Wade and Bowa deserve all the credit for 2008.

You make great points, RichNC. He needs someone who will knows the NL game and will speak up. The bench coach before Jimmy Williams, Gary Varsko, I believe, never did that.

Yeah, Charlie is so dumb he has finished second in the division twice, made the playoffs twice ands won a World Series...

Really, it is important that Charlie have someone advise him who knows what he is doing. Notice that when Williams was hired, Charlie became a lot smarter. Mackanin is a solid, National League guy who will help with decision-making. Hiring an AL buddy of Charlie's would have been a mistake.
