The Phillies have been searching for another left-handed reliever since spring training. It took them four months, but it appears they have finally found one.

Scott Eyre, designated for assignment by the Cubs earlier this week, is the man.

The Phillies will need to make a roster move once he arrives, meaning it is possible that lefty J.A. Happ, a starter turned reliever, could be on his way back up the Northeast Extension.

Here's the press release from the team:

Left-hander Scott Eyre was acquired by the Phillies from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league right-hander Brian Schlitter, Senior Vice President & General Manager Pat Gillick announced today.

Eyre, 36, had appeared in only 19 games for the Cubs this season due to two separate stints on the disabled list for left elbow inflammation and a strained left groin.  He was 2-0 with a 7.15 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 11.1 innings (11.1 SO/9.0 IP).  His first 14 appearances of the season were scoreless (9.0 IP).  Against the National League this season, Eyre is 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA in 14 games.  Six of the nine earned runs he has allowed this year have come against American League teams.

Eyre has held left-handed hitters to a .259 (7-27) average this season and .244 (214-877) for his career.  He has pitched 1.0 scoreless inning against the NL East Division this season in two games.  Over the last five seasons (2004-08), Eyre has appeared in 317 games, the fourth-highest total among major league left-handed pitchers.  Fellow Phillie J.C. Romero is first on the list (336).

Originally selected by Texas in the ninth round of the 1991 draft, Eyre went 23-29 with four saves and a 4.42 ERA in 556 games (32 starts) for the White Sox (1997-2000), Blue Jays (2001-02), Giants (2002-05) and Cubs (2006-08).  In his last four seasons (2005-08), he has 197 strikeouts in 193.1 innings (9.2 SO/9.0 IP).

Schlitter was 4-3 with six saves and a 2.22 ERA in 34 games for single-A Clearwater.  He had 58 strikeouts in 48.2 innings.  He was a 16th round selection by the Phillies in the 2007 draft.

Lovely, the acquisition of a quick-and-easy, crappy left-hander likely means the end of the pursuit for a QUALITY left-hander. And when will this franchise learn that you WILL NEVER BE a championship caliber team swinging for the fences all the time, striking out too much, and waiting around for a three-run home run to bail you out of trouble.

Well that pretty much wraps up the World Series! All they have to do now is just show up!

That's all this team ever does, pickup other teams castoffs. If only ownership wanted to win half as much as the fans, maybe one day they'd make a move that gets them to the World Series instead of one that saves them money.

How bout a hitter in the middle of the line up that can hit the ball? Maybe like 5th or 6th so there is not so many 1,2,3 innings. Does anyone know if Cole can play first when he is not pitching?

time to drop Rollins down to 6th in the line-up. He's just not the same player this season. Let Victorino lead off, followed by Utley, whoever's in RF, Howard, Burrell. Or push Burrell to 3rd.
