Phillies have not yet made their offer to Hamels

LOS ANGELES -- John Boggs, the San Diego-based agent for Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels, had lunch with his client here in Southern California Monday, but he had no plans to meet with club officials during the team's three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Boggs, in fact, was flying to Boston Tuesday.

That does not mean on-going negotiations between the Phillies and Boggs have broken down. As the agent pointed out, in this age of technology, face-to-face meetings are nice but not entirely necessary.

With the July 31 trade deadline approaching, the Phillies are expected to soon make their best contract offer in an attempt to keep Hamels in Philadelphia, but that offer has not yet been made.

When it is, Hamels will have to decide if it is enough to remain with the Phillies or if the enticement of a potential mega-deal offer from another organization is too much of a temptation to resist. If Hamels declines the Phillies' offer, the team will have to decide if one of the trade proposals coming their way for the 28-year-old lefthander is worth consumating.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has said it's possible that the trade deadline could pass without Hamels signing a deal and without a trade of the pitcher, but that certainly would not be the best-case scenario for the team.

Stay tuned.

He has to be signed by the trade deadline or he has to be dealt. Why is this so hard to understand for Amaro? I see no other way around it! You can't let Hamels walk with nothing in return. That will crusify this organization.

I agree it is sign or get traded it is that simple. I for one want Cole here long term but if he isn't willing to sign a 6 year deal at 25 million a season then I guess he will be traded. I would give him 6 plus and opion for a 7th if he meet certain things in the contract. burt come rube just get it done. also get rid of Victorino, Utley, Blanton for what ever you can get!

@FetchDixon...first off, what does "crusify" mean? If you meant "crucify" I still don't understand what you mean. Crucify it how? In the media? With the fans? Or in the clubhouse? Not exactly sure what you mean by that.

Secondly, why do they HAVE to sign him by the deadline? After July 31st they still have exclusive negotiating rights all the way through October, and perhaps the team's second half will give Hamels more reasons to want to stay in Philadelphia than he already has. Also, they if they let Hamels walk at the end of the season they will be compensated with draft picks; any deal that is made now must take this into account, and the players they receive in any trade must be a better value than what could be drafted next June. (The draft, as with "prospects" is all a crapshoot; you never know what you're going get or if they'll ever reach the major leagues—cases in point: which players the Phillies have dealt over the last few years have made a significant impact in the major leagues?)

I see no reason to move Hamels unless the Phillies are completely overwhelmed by an offer from someone—and let's face it, with the new CBA and lack of draft picks an acquiring team would receive if Hamels were to leave that team, and with the seemingly abundance of pitchers on the market, no one is going to offer anything that would be worth trading Hamels.

wrong on compensatory draft picks - they do not get anything but a GM that will look really stupid if he walks after the season. new rules this year.

Can you explain the new rules to us? My understanding is that the new rules keep in place the 2 pick compensation(sandwich pick plus a protected first rd pick given up by the team that signs the free agent. The protection being that teams in the lower half of the standings only give up a 2nd rd pick) for a Type A free agent that belongs to a team. The new rules stop middle relievers, etc. from being classed as Type A while also not allowing players acquired mid-season as a rental to yield compensation to the new team if they don't re-sign. The minimum contract offer to qualify as Type A is about 13 million a year and Hamels is the Phillies player so they would receive a Sandwich pick between the rounds 1 and 2 as well as the 1st round pick of the team that signs Hamels(he is not signing with a sub .500 team) So, can you let us know why this is not correct?

Actually ChahlieM, you're the one who is wrong. The Phils will gain a compensatory pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds provided they make a qualifying offer to Hamels as defined by the new CBA. Hamels will surely decline this offer, and the Phils will receive an extra pick in next year's draft. It's good to know the facts

@Stevep...thanks for helping to clarify the rules for some less-informed, know-it-all fans out there.

So now we're getting giddy over losing the premier LH in the game for essentially a 2nd round compensatory *DRAFT* pick.

Not a first rounder, but a 2nd round equivalent.

Lorda mighty. That's like selling your Ferrari for two lottery tickets.

No, I for one am definitely not getting "giddy" over losing Hamels for a draft pick. My point was, in response to the initial post-writer, was that there was no need to trade Hamels by July 31st to guarantee at least some kind of return due to the draft pick they would receive. While I firmly believe it is in the Phillies best interest to resign Hamels and forget about getting something for him, with the crapshoot that minor league prospects are, there is really no difference between completing a trade for one or getting an extra draft pick next year, so there is no need to rush through a trade.

In order to trade Hamels, you must get the other team's #1 minor league prospect, along with another good prospect. Otherwise keep him to the end of the season, and get a first round compensation pick for him in next June's draft.

Fetch- Do you really think that Amaro should broadcast to the world that they are the only two options? Only an idiot would make that public. It would destroy any leverage the Phillies might have with trade partners. Why is THAT so hard to understand for YOU?

Hamels has to take the risk of a Tommy John injury to his pitching elbow which would sideline him all of next year and leave him with no fiancial security for his family. If it were me and I had a 120M offer for 5 or 6 years, I would sign fast! A bird on hand is better than a bird in the bush.

@Aces high...that's a very easy position to take, saying you'd sign fast, if someone offered you that kind of money. But if you were Hamels, why would you? Why would you take $120 million now (when you already have made more money than most of civilization does) when you can wait a few more months and sign for 30%-40% more? I know it's a lot of money either way, but they're playing in a different economic stratosphere than most of us. Would I sign for 6 year and $120 million? Yeah. I'd be more than happy to take his one year, $15 million deal for 2012 for the remainder of my life, but that's just not optional. In the baseball world, things are different than the real world.

Hamels has all the cards right now. He knows he'll be offered $140+ million for 6 years by the Dodgers, Yankees and probably a couple other teams. If he gets traded to contender it'll only be for a couple of months and he'll have a chance to get back to the World Series. He and his agent must be smiling just thinking about it.
