Peters ruptures Achilles
Jeff McLane
Eagles tackle Jason Peters ruptured the Achilles tendon in his right leg and will have surgery next Tuesday, the team announced Friday.
Peters injured his Achilles while training in Texas, the Eagles said. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Steve Raikin of the Rothman Institute.
While the severity of the rupture is unknown, the injury typically takes six-nine months to recover from, if not longer. It would seem that Peters will have difficulty returning in time for the 2012 opener in September, and even when he does return it usually takes another year for a player to be 100 percent.
"We all know how much Jason loves to play the game and how much he was looking forward to the start of the 2012 season," Eagles coach Andy Reid said in a statement. "Jason is one of the best, if not the best, offensive tackle in the NFL. We don’t know when he will return to the field and we will not speculate on a timeline. We are just going to let the surgical process and the rehabilitation process play itself out."
DeMeco Ryans, who the Eagles recently acquired in a trade, suffered an Achilles injury in Oct. 2010. He made it back in time for the 2011 opener, but he was clearly not playing at full capacity for most of the season.
The loss of Peters is a major blow to the Eagles. The 30-year-old earned his fifth straight Pro Bowl invite last year and was considered by many to be the best left tackle in the game in 2011. With the signing of guard Evan Mathis two weeks ago the Eagles locked up their entire starting offensive line for the next three seasons.
On Wednesday, Reid said that this was the most confident he has felt about his line since 2008, the last season he had with Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas as his tackles.
"It's been a while," Reid said at the NFL owners meetings in West Palm Beach, Fla. "That was one of the things Howie [Roseman] and I talked about -- the continuity part of it. If we could keep the guys together, let's attempt to do that."
It's unclear if Reid knew about Peters' injury then. Now he has to scramble to find a starting left tackle. The Eagles announced that they re-signed tackle King Dunlap on Friday, but the team may still be in the market for a free agent tackle. They could also use the draft to find a tackle.
Kareem McKenzie of the Giants and Demetrius Bell of the Bills are two of the more attractive tackles still on the market. McKenzie has played most of his career at rigth tackle. Bell replaced Peters at left tackle after the Eagles traded for the former college tight end in 2009.
"Howie and I will sort out the roster situation for the offensive line," Reid said in his statement. "We are glad to have King back as a part of our offensive line and we will continue to scan the free agent market, also knowing the draft is less than a month away.”
Todd Herremans could move over from right tackle, but the Eagles may prefer him to protect quarterback Michael Vick's blindside. The left-handed Dunlap can play both tackle spots, but has said he feels most comfortable at left tackle.
Right guard Danny Watkins played left tackle at Baylor. Mathis played briefly at right tackle last year in training camp.
Who would ever think that in a profession where they routinely inject cortisone into injured ligaments that one of them would rupture? I mean, it IS a known side effect - but the game must go on! Susie from Philly
You posters who think Jason Peters will be back this year are fools. If he works hard at rehab, he will be at 80% by the start of next season.Jason Peters is the best player on the Eagles roster, Shady McCoy a close 2nd. This season is toast.Andy Reid will use this as an excuse to buy more time, and be rewarded with a contract extention. See you in about 15 months; hopefully we have a new coach, and a new GM by then!!!!!! (HTML deleted) chocolatethunder

Reggie Mc Kenzie is available. GO GET HIM NOW!!!! You do not blow a high draft pick on a guy who wil be back in two years. You get the best available to fill in and resign King Dunlop for insurance. garcia7
This is a disaster. All bets for the season are officially suspended. Dexter
This was the first time in my 41 years of life that I truly felt that the Eagles were positioned to win it all...Now it's over.
I can only hope that the Eagles brain trust who really had an A+ off season can pull one more rabbit out of a hat.
The loss of Jason Peters is as profound as losing Vick, DJax, Nnamdi, and TCole all at once.
What kind of "practice" was held to allow for this insurmountable loss to occur..? It's still March!
People who understand the game know that the O-line and specifically LT MUST be great to win.
Think D.Ware, JPP, and orakpo (6 games)..??
Solution: Trade for a disgruntled JAKE LONG Now!
or, Go birds 2014?!?

The football gods are at work against Lurie and Reid. They have sold out on character and integrity. They will never win a championship. Taser
Love it....

Great teams survive injuries...bring in the best option via free agent or trade and let Mudd coach em up...the team needs the high picks for defense in the draft. greenbloodVAEagle
Don't worry fans, I have a plan. I'm going to convert one of my defensive linemen into an offensive tackle. BRILLIANT!!! It worked with Juan Castillo, right? Wow, I'm so smart. I'm going to reward myself with a roast pork sandwich! ANDY-IS-FAT
Wish Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan were still around. Those guys almost never got hurt. Drew777
Draft a 27-year old Policeman this time. kjuggs77
Dayum...nothing comes easy in Philly... the only good thing about this happening now that the tendon was probrably weak.. Its better for it to happen now than happen later on.. hope Jason recovers quickly.. They need to get a tackle in the first round now.. We have got nine pics to get another line backer..package for a trade...get a big Runing back etc.. I just hope they dont blow it in this draft!!
nixman101
Herrmanns to LT...King to RT. JP done to 2013, when he will be almost 32...maybe he played his last game with the Eagles! Romus
And 2012 is already...DONE. Bobby G
TN, would normally agree but LTs demand top money whereas a one year RT may be managable. Definitely not a rookie at RT in any event. Perhaps the Mudd man has ideas. Maybe someone already on the roster can be inserted. Hopefully not Dunlop. Watkins at LT is a no go. THat decision was made when he was slated for RG in the first place. tpizza
The Eagles haven't really suffered serious injuries the last few years so it just happens to be our turn. Unfortunately when the Eagles were healthy they didn't go anywhere. Drew777
WHAT A BLOW!!! Dr. Raikin performed my Achillies surgery back in 06, so Peters is definitely in GOOD HANDS!! dmoney250
Billy Penn is not pleased for some reason. Did Nutter do something horrible to this statue?? The Curse is back in Philly! Goodbye Eagles season 2012, no Super bowl run now, no NHL Championship run, no Soul Arena Bowl, no World Series run, no NBA Fi.......oh well, THAT'S not happenining anyway..................! Panthro2011
"It's unclear if Reid knew about Peters' injury then." Seriously? Reid says this is the best he's felt about his line since '08 and you're not sure if he knew about Peters injury before he said that? Duhhhhh, obviously he didn't.
JimG
This is what happens to cursed franchises. savebabygorilla
The Eagles and Phillies just can't seem to stay away from serious injuries. Looks like just an average season for both teams. fanup
Why don't we ever get a message like this from Joe Banner.
The Eagles organization is saddened by sudden retirement of Andy Reid for personal reasons. Drew777
Last year the Giants season looked finished with all the injuries they had before the season started and they won the Super Bowl. No chance of that happening here. Drew777- Just cursed...WTF!!!!! tkeagle
dont know why that posted 3 times...dont think my opinion is that important...side note...trading up to get a T in the 1st thats worth anything will be very expensive and Decastro is the best OL prospect in the draft imo, but he should be easier to get. In that scenario everyone is playing their most natural position chrisr
well on the bright side, he will fit right in with all the other Eagles...they can all sit around the whirlpool and talk about their Achilles and ACL injuries. sedale

maybe they move Watkins to LT and get Decastro in the 1st...then if Peters can come back they could groom Watkins to be his replacement. It was his position at college and he may be more comfortable there. Plus neither of our tackles are spring chickens so we need to have someone in place for when they cant do it anymore...that is if Peters will ever be the same again. chrisr

Ha ha.
Crosby hit in face with puck
Peters gets hurt.
Injuries are funny (when it's not your team) Sidney Crosby
whoever they get to replace him will be getting a ring this season sec719
I have another theory but you Philadelphian got to stop cooking with cheeze. It got the fat boy so excited he hurt himself on the way to the Steak shop. Canadalovesphilly
This is terrible news for the franchise. A different position would be so much less of an impact. This now takes our attention away from defense in the draft and puts us in a situation where we may have to look for a RT with our 1st or 2nd pick. If we thought Vick threw alot of picks last year, wait until he has speed rushers coming at him because the King is getting beaten badly. Fanland.com Eagles Guy
This is an ominous sign for the upcoming season. Usually the Eagles at least wait until the OTAs to suffer a season ending injury. They've started early this year. SteveS11
gone for the year psualum
. . just as Mad Andy was planning to use Jason's speed in trick plays, from the FB position. Sad news for Vick: Mike, get a fresh pair of Nikes, you're going to be running for your life, again! Tyrone Biggums- You don't want to move Todd away from Vick's blind side and replace him with a rookie or FA. Keep Todd on the RT and get a rookie or FA for the LT spot. If rookie or FA struggles and needs a few weeks, the King can play there. It's Vick's strong side so he should be able to compensate for penetration around the tackle. Think about it people, it's not as bad as you all are making it out to be. McCoy may not get 1300 yards but Reid isn't a run happy guy anyway.
Unbelievable. No Philly pro athlete should want to get out of bed right now. Peters had a great year after some earlier injury issues, a tough loss. PhillySubsMac
Trade up to 3 for Kalil!? Eaglecheesehead
Can't believe it... Phillycb21
The first coffin nail for the year. Now a trade-up would make sense to get Matt Kalil. Peters will never be the same. OL have to carry too much weight for that type of injury. Bama
Tough break for Peters. Maybe jesus, er, Teblow can place his hands on the achilles and heal it in time for the season. ANDY-IS-FAT
Man, this blows. Well, maybe there will be a 26-35 years old, raw former firefighter available to be drafted at #15... diamondd40
Always fun to lose your best player in March. Followthislogic
Fire Andy. This just gives em a built in excuse. Fritz and Alice
Well!.....Now we know how we're gonna use our first Pick. Eaglecheesehead
we can't catch a break.....there goes any chance of winning the superbowl.....you can't just replace the best tackle in the nfl.....there's always next year right ! bigpaulie
"The left-handed Dunlap can play both tackle spots" Yeah but can't play either spot well that's why he's not a starter. I would rather they bring in a veteran on a one-year deal or move Todd Herremans over to LT. rich0376
F@#K!!!! Eaglecheesehead
Can DeMeco Ryans go both ways ? He could take over for Peters. johnny eagle
The move should be to put Herremanns at LT and bring in a vet RT. Can't use a first round pick on a LT, because he won't have a place to play when Peters comes back unless they cut him. Don't see the latter happening so think it will be the former. tpizza
Just when things seemed to be going our way...S**t! F**K! sarah89
This is karma.FO lies,AR lies,be cheap and lie about it,it comes back to get you the only problem is it didn't happen to one of the FO or AR.IT'S KARMA and this will be their excuse to keep fat man another year. sewell guy- Dunlap has been a disaster in the limited time he's seen. We need to find a better solution at left tackle until Peters is back to full strength. Hutch
Peters will be out the entire 2012 season. fmMD
I don't F'IN believe this!!! We finally get the massive hole at MLB filled and now a huge hole at LT opens up. I swear we are friggin' jinxed. rich0376
Damn. I believe they absolutely draft an OT with the first pick. beegal99
wow. huge loss. I think it big enough of injury to take eagles out of winning division. Tripod691
Huge blow
rustypop58
wow ! .. Joe Banner actually reads this stuff ! anthemra
Darn it... That stinks. Elbarad
it's okay everyone. we still have THE KING. AlexSp- Good thing it was the LT and since Vick is left handed he should see a LB or DE coming at him. Eagles will get a decent LT to replace Jason, and Mudd having a whole pre-season to work with the guy, we'll be ok. Everyone said Eagles wouldn't be able to replace Thomas and we got Jason so we'll get someone to fill in. You all worry more than a prostitute turning 40.
Maybe Ryan Howard can play there when he's fully recovered. He's like 350 now. UnaBlogger
O-lineman first round, here it comes... snakeplissken
Great. That's just great. I was really starting to liek this guy. He was just crushing dudes and I loved when he was run blocking. He looked like the Great Wall of China coming at the defenders.
Dogonnitt just when the O'line was really looking good. Phillyexp
This should wipe that smirk off Howie's face ArtieLange
Probably one of the two best players (along with Shady) on the team last year. Penfold18
Looks like Andy found his scapegoat for pflynn20
The LT may wind up being Herremanns. tpizza
Who are the good offensive tackles in the draft? I've been paying closer attention to the defensive side. Penfold18
Instead of best player available, it looks like it's "get the best Left Tackle you can in the 1st round" time. dawkbeast20
McNabb is fat enough to play tackle dontavoidtheobvious
Can't depend on Dunlop. Sheez, I'm getting too old for this stuff. tpizza
FUUUUUUUDGE (only I didn't say fudge)! Penfold18
No big deal. We just re-signed King Dunlap Sports4Life
what is the point of mentioning mcnabb? seriously this is a major injury and will impact the eagles season heavily smiggs13
Anyone out there with a 'high motor' to replace him? Apollo Creed
Donavan McNabb is still available dontavoidtheobvious
wait, wait, wait....all of you wanted us to lose anyway so they could fire Reid and Co. Wait, wait...All of you expected us to fail because of Reid and Co. and Vick. Wait, wait....all of you knew for sure this season was 8-8 at best, why the long faces now, I assumed this was welcome news so that your precious predictions could come true? peteike
Major loss. Could mean a major shift in draft plans. armchairGM- So AR will never coach Peters in a game again then... TVGuy22
Leg injuries have been the Achilles heel of Philly athletes over the last few months. 2ndNlong
Justin and I were at a party last night and were doing pony rides around a keg when his achilles just popped. I'm sorry Philly. p-diddy

April Fools!! Wait, what? No, not April fools??? OK then this is all just a bad dream. Like yesterday I thought I saw Lindros practicing with the Flyers. Someone wake me up from this nightmare... thegamepa
Holy F. p-diddy
Peters was a real stud. Now the Eagles need an OT who can step in and the draft now has changed altogether. Koons
Thought it was looking a little too rosy with the Eagles. Ok now it feels back to normal. mackayak
This team is cursed and we will never win the Lombardi Trophy!!! consierge- huge loss...looks like another 1st round pick an O-lineman is in order!
Domo tweeted that last year Peters only gave up 1 sack out 570 pass plays! This is a horrible loss! How do you replace the best left tackle in the entire NFL? ej610
Tough loss, guess that changes the approach to the draft hope there is a stud left tackle
rmartin
great. just great. birds748
McCoy just lost 600 yards of rushing Blue Hens Rule
I will use Tom Cruise's line in 'A Few Good Men' about our Philly athletes getting injured lately, "And the hits just keep on coming..." Jacket85
See you in 2013, Jason. Mike Vick, good luck with health this season. Yikes. Mike in LA
Now we know the Eagles' first round draft pick target. Ugh. psuflyers
Is this why they re-signed King Dunlap? nceagle
The season hasn't even started. GREAT! cesar20
Guess that is why they signed King Dunlap....and there goes our first pick to the OL...can't blame the mail boy for this one. nuggett
that sucks jodya2
WTF! cesar20
What a terrible loss especially given how well the left side of the line played in the 2nd half of the season. The only silver lining is that it's still before the draft, mini-camps, and training camp. sicarius
Ouch. That hurts. dingo8baby
Might as well take a look at Marcus McNeill. kimbo39
There simply is no Justice. Eddie Spaghetti
This development thoroughly explains the re-signing of King Dunlop...... Mark1npt
Oh, that is bad. He was a stud for us last year. I imagine it is unlikely he will be ready to play by the end of the season, let alone the start. Luckily, the Eagles have time and the draft to prepare for this. Commish

WTF - how did this happen? Was he with Joba Chamberlain jumping on a trampoline? MFCrusco- Dollar to a doughnut Reid brings back Steve Smith and converts him into a "fastball" offensive lineman.
Any takers? - Nah, Reid mistook his ankle for a turkey drum stick, and. . . well, use your imagination.
Comment removed.- How many years has it been since the air guitar? We changed starting QBs twice since then. Also, our savior was sent to Arizona and has since been replaced by an unknown, below-average QB. Yet, your headline reads "Air Guitar?"
Talk about stuck on stupid.
The Eagles organization is deeply saddened and disappointed about the injury to Jason. Get well Jason and we will do what it takes to replace him.
Joe Joe Banner - Eagles President- Each season, you expect at least one of your starters to go down. We were fortunate that we got an early start. There's time to replace him.
I hope Reid doesn't start building his excuses from this. After all, I believe the Patriots had to use a back-up receiver as a corner last season because of so many such losses. - Reading between the lines, " It is cheaper for us to get some guy off the waiver wire than to pay your Pro Bowl Bonus."
