Peters ruptures Achilles

POSTED: Friday, March 30, 2012, 12:53 PM

Eagles tackle Jason Peters ruptured the Achilles tendon in his right leg and will have surgery next Tuesday, the team announced Friday.

Peters injured his Achilles while training in Texas, the Eagles said. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Steve Raikin of the Rothman Institute.

While the severity of the rupture is unknown, the injury typically takes six-nine months to recover from, if not longer. It would seem that Peters will have difficulty returning in time for the 2012 opener in September, and even when he does return it usually takes another year for a player to be 100 percent.

"We all know how much Jason loves to play the game and how much he was looking forward to the start of the 2012 season," Eagles coach Andy Reid said in a statement. "Jason is one of the best, if not the best, offensive tackle in the NFL. We don’t know when he will return to the field and we will not speculate on a timeline. We are just going to let the surgical process and the rehabilitation process play itself out."

DeMeco Ryans, who the Eagles recently acquired in a trade, suffered an Achilles injury in Oct. 2010. He made it back in time for the 2011 opener, but he was clearly not playing at full capacity for most of the season.

The loss of Peters is a major blow to the Eagles. The 30-year-old earned his fifth straight Pro Bowl invite last year and was considered by many to be the best left tackle in the game in 2011. With the signing of guard Evan Mathis two weeks ago the Eagles locked up their entire starting offensive line for the next three seasons.

On Wednesday, Reid said that this was the most confident he has felt about his line since 2008, the last season he had with Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas as his tackles.

"It's been a while," Reid said at the NFL owners meetings in West Palm Beach, Fla. "That was one of the things Howie [Roseman] and I talked about -- the continuity part of it. If we could keep the guys together, let's attempt to do that."

It's unclear if Reid knew about Peters' injury then. Now he has to scramble to find a starting left tackle. The Eagles announced that they re-signed tackle King Dunlap on Friday, but the team may still be in the market for a free agent tackle. They could also use the draft to find a tackle.

Kareem McKenzie of the Giants and Demetrius Bell of the Bills are two of the more attractive tackles still on the market. McKenzie has played most of his career at rigth tackle. Bell replaced Peters at left tackle after the Eagles traded for the former college tight end in 2009.

"Howie and I will sort out the roster situation for the offensive line," Reid said in his statement. "We are glad to have King back as a part of our offensive line and we will continue to scan the free agent market, also knowing the draft is less than a month away.”

Todd Herremans could move over from right tackle, but the Eagles may prefer him to protect quarterback Michael Vick's blindside. The left-handed Dunlap can play both tackle spots, but has said he feels most comfortable at left tackle.

Right guard Danny Watkins played left tackle at Baylor. Mathis played briefly at right tackle last year in training camp.

Who would ever think that in a profession where they routinely inject cortisone into injured ligaments that one of them would rupture? I mean, it IS a known side effect - but the game must go on!

You posters who think Jason Peters will be back this year are fools. If he works hard at rehab, he will be at 80% by the start of next season.Jason Peters is the best player on the Eagles roster, Shady McCoy a close 2nd. This season is toast.Andy Reid will use this as an excuse to buy more time, and be rewarded with a contract extention. See you in about 15 months; hopefully we have a new coach, and a new GM by then!!!!!! (HTML deleted)

Reggie Mc Kenzie is available. GO GET HIM NOW!!!! You do not blow a high draft pick on a guy who wil be back in two years. You get the best available to fill in and resign King Dunlop for insurance.

This was the first time in my 41 years of life that I truly felt that the Eagles were positioned to win it all...Now it's over.
I can only hope that the Eagles brain trust who really had an A+ off season can pull one more rabbit out of a hat.
The loss of Jason Peters is as profound as losing Vick, DJax, Nnamdi, and TCole all at once.
What kind of "practice" was held to allow for this insurmountable loss to occur..? It's still March!
People who understand the game know that the O-line and specifically LT MUST be great to win.
Think D.Ware, JPP, and orakpo (6 games)..??
Solution: Trade for a disgruntled JAKE LONG Now!
    or, Go birds 2014?!?

Great teams survive injuries...bring in the best option via free agent or trade and let Mudd coach em up...the team needs the high picks for defense in the draft.

Don't worry fans, I have a plan. I'm going to convert one of my defensive linemen into an offensive tackle. BRILLIANT!!! It worked with Juan Castillo, right? Wow, I'm so smart. I'm going to reward myself with a roast pork sandwich!

Dayum...nothing comes easy in Philly... the only good thing about this happening now that the tendon was probrably weak.. Its better for it to happen now than happen later on.. hope Jason recovers quickly.. They need to get a tackle in the first round now.. We have got nine pics to get another line backer..package for a trade...get a big Runing back etc.. I just hope they dont blow it in this draft!!

TN, would normally agree but LTs demand top money whereas a one year RT may be managable. Definitely not a rookie at RT in any event. Perhaps the Mudd man has ideas. Maybe someone already on the roster can be inserted. Hopefully not Dunlop. Watkins at LT is a no go. THat decision was made when he was slated for RG in the first place.

The Eagles haven't really suffered serious injuries the last few years so it just happens to be our turn. Unfortunately when the Eagles were healthy they didn't go anywhere.

"It's unclear if Reid knew about Peters' injury then." Seriously? Reid says this is the best he's felt about his line since '08 and you're not sure if he knew about Peters injury before he said that? Duhhhhh, obviously he didn't.

dont know why that posted 3 times...dont think my opinion is that important...side note...trading up to get a T in the 1st thats worth anything will be very expensive and Decastro is the best OL prospect in the draft imo, but he should be easier to get. In that scenario everyone is playing their most natural position

maybe they move Watkins to LT and get Decastro in the 1st...then if Peters can come back they could groom Watkins to be his replacement. It was his position at college and he may be more comfortable there. Plus neither of our tackles are spring chickens so we need to have someone in place for when they cant do it anymore...that is if Peters will ever be the same again.

This is terrible news for the franchise. A different position would be so much less of an impact. This now takes our attention away from defense in the draft and puts us in a situation where we may have to look for a RT with our 1st or 2nd pick. If we thought Vick threw alot of picks last year, wait until he has speed rushers coming at him because the King is getting beaten badly.

This is an ominous sign for the upcoming season. Usually the Eagles at least wait until the OTAs to suffer a season ending injury. They've started early this year.

You don't want to move Todd away from Vick's blind side and replace him with a rookie or FA. Keep Todd on the RT and get a rookie or FA for the LT spot. If rookie or FA struggles and needs a few weeks, the King can play there. It's Vick's strong side so he should be able to compensate for penetration around the tackle. Think about it people, it's not as bad as you all are making it out to be. McCoy may not get 1300 yards but Reid isn't a run happy guy anyway.

The move should be to put Herremanns at LT and bring in a vet RT. Can't use a first round pick on a LT, because he won't have a place to play when Peters comes back unless they cut him. Don't see the latter happening so think it will be the former.

Good thing it was the LT and since Vick is left handed he should see a LB or DE coming at him. Eagles will get a decent LT to replace Jason, and Mudd having a whole pre-season to work with the guy, we'll be ok. Everyone said Eagles wouldn't be able to replace Thomas and we got Jason so we'll get someone to fill in. You all worry more than a prostitute turning 40.

Leg injuries have been the Achilles heel of Philly athletes over the last few months.

Justin and I were at a party last night and were doing pony rides around a keg when his achilles just popped. I'm sorry Philly.

Peters was a real stud. Now the Eagles need an OT who can step in and the draft now has changed altogether.

Domo tweeted that last year Peters only gave up 1 sack out 570 pass plays! This is a horrible loss! How do you replace the best left tackle in the entire NFL?

I will use Tom Cruise's line in 'A Few Good Men' about our Philly athletes getting injured lately, "And the hits just keep on coming..."

What a terrible loss especially given how well the left side of the line played in the 2nd half of the season. The only silver lining is that it's still before the draft, mini-camps, and training camp.

Oh, that is bad. He was a stud for us last year. I imagine it is unlikely he will be ready to play by the end of the season, let alone the start. Luckily, the Eagles have time and the draft to prepare for this.

Dollar to a doughnut Reid brings back Steve Smith and converts him into a "fastball" offensive lineman.

    Any takers?

Nah, Reid mistook his ankle for a turkey drum stick, and. . . well, use your imagination.

How many years has it been since the air guitar? We changed starting QBs twice since then. Also, our savior was sent to Arizona and has since been replaced by an unknown, below-average QB. Yet, your headline reads "Air Guitar?"

    Talk about stuck on stupid.

The Eagles organization is deeply saddened and disappointed about the injury to Jason. Get well Jason and we will do what it takes to replace him.

Each season, you expect at least one of your starters to go down. We were fortunate that we got an early start. There's time to replace him.

I hope Reid doesn't start building his excuses from this. After all, I believe the Patriots had to use a back-up receiver as a corner last season because of so many such losses.

Reading between the lines, " It is cheaper for us to get some guy off the waiver wire than to pay your Pro Bowl Bonus."
