McNabb Agent: No Discussion of Teams
Les Bowen
Finally, amidst all the smoke and mirrors, an actual source close to the situation has spoken.
Your Eagletarian just talked to Donovan McNabb's agent, Fletcher Smith, who said he has no reason to believe a trade is imminent, and says there have been no conversations with the Eagles about which teams the quarterback would or would not prefer to be traded to.
"If we get to that bridge, we'll have to cross it," said Smith, who said his client is holding up well under the torrent of speculation.
Smith noted that McNabb has been at the center of the whirlwind before. "There's always something, every offseason."
Contrary to a Friday ESPN report, Smith said he did not believe McNabb had spoken recently with Eagles coach Andy Reid. Smith said that right now, there isn't that much for them to talk about.
The report said McNabb told Reid he wanted to stay in Philadelphia, not be traded to Oakland or Buffalo. A McNabb spokesman said this afternoon that McNabb and Reid text one another frequently. The spokesman said McNabb, indeed, wants to stay with the Eagles, but that McNabb and Reid have not texted or spoken on that subject.
Smith also questioned whether Reid's comments this week, acknowledging that the Birds are listening to offers for all three of their quarterbacks, is the definite signal of a McNabb trade that everyone seems to have turned it into.
Smith said that "given the sensitivity of the situation" he hopes the Eagles talk to McNabb about his preferences before they trade him, if they trade him. "Donovan has been there a long time. I would think they would want to do right by him, reach out, tell him what their intentions are."
If the Eagles don't end up trading McNabb, after what is surely going to be a long spring of endless rumors, can No. 5 take the helm and lead the team as if nothing had ever happened?
"It can't be any more difficult than T.O.," Smith said.
True, that.
There is good reason to think Smith might be right about nothing happening right away. A team source confirmed that Eagles president Joe Banner remained in Florida for a little vacation time following this week's league meetings, and that Reid is doing the same in Utah. Of course, this isn't 1950, the principals don't have to be huddled around one phone in a conference room, but the most important trade of the Reid Era probably isn't going to be made while Andy's wading in a trout stream, or something.

McNabb deserves better than to be left hanging with no commitment one way or another from the organization. Whether you like the guy or not, the reason he's so polarizing is his success. If he wasn't any good (see Tim Couch, Akili Smith), he wouldn't have lasted 10 years in the league. Perhaps the reason the Birds can get over the championship hump is because mgmt can't ever put together a complete team (see no FB in '08, no WR except '04). McNabb has been nothing short of a warrior for an organization that clearly doesn't care. jonnyb0916- I think we should Keep McNabb and trade Kolb since nobody is going to give us enough for him. Why give him a way? Who cares what the whining McNabb Haters think. They are a laughing stock around the country anyways. Kolb may never amount to anything, i'm not convinced. McNabb has 5 years left and is a proven winner. Get him some help so we can go back to the bowl. ChrisM
Trash McNabb all you want. What everyone should really be annoyed at is the constant articles wiht down right lies in them. I don't live in Philly any longer and come to Philly.com to keep up with the city and, of course, the sports teams. Obviously this is no longer a good source of valid information on the Eagles. I love #5...he has given me more reason to cheer than any other eagle in history. BUT, it is time to move on. Every franchise QB gets traded or will get traded at some point (except Peyton maybe). Don't say Brady...if you think Belichik wouldnt move on if they dont win another AFC championship in the next 3-5 years you are crazy. Montana was let walk for christs sake. relly142

Comment removed.- McNabb's agent thinks the Eagles should "do right by him". Hmmmm maybe the Eagles should do right by their fans and get the most they can for McNabb instead of worrying about what #5 wants. bird11
- Bill1966 - Why would we do that? This is football you don't give away assets. Your hatred for McNabb is clouding you common sense. Good thing you don't run this team. Besides you McNabb haters will find something to cry about and create drama regardless who is at QB. ChrisM
DonovanistheEaglesallTimeGreatestPlayer: You done blowing Mcnabb. You aint a fan. You got a man crush. You cheer for one person. Mcnabb is a joke. What QB laughs after they mess up? Also freely lead them to the playoffs in 2002, Jeff garcia did it to. Also the defense was the heart in the early 2000's. So all you Mcnabb lovers, need to realize the facts. He is overrated just like Vick was with the falcons. sheeron
"Oh so close! The Philadelphia Eagles took the defending NFL Champion New England Patriots right down to the closing minute, bowing 24-21. Donovan McNabb played a great game, but the four turnovers (3 by INT) ultimately caused the Eagles to falter on the game’s biggest stage. McNabb completed 30 of 51 passes for 357 yards and 3 TD’s. Those 3 INT’s however, killed any chance the Eagles realistically had of winning this game. But even so, McNabb had 1 last chance with just 46 seconds left. The biggest problem: the Eagles had to start on their own 9-yard line with no timeouts. They only needed a FG to tie, so the offense only had to move the ball about 45-50 yards to give David Akers a shot of kicking a game-tying FG. On first down, McNabb completed a pass over the middle to Westbrook. Wrong choice! Westbrook should have just dropped the pass as he was immediately tackled for no gain and wasting precious seconds off the clock. The next play was an incompletion to T.O. Then, Rodney Harrison intercepted McNabb, sealing the Eagles fate." This was in the paper the next day. Get real if you still love McCHOKE!!!!!!!!!!! sheeron- sheeron - You forget New England Cheated and got fined officially for cheating in the Pit game before that. They knew out plays. Also our defense gave up 27 points. How many teams win a superbowl after giving up that many points. It takes a team to win the Bowl. Get a clue. In all the big games out defense has failed. Go check out how many points are defense has given up in championship games! So you can't blame one person you nitwit. ChrisM
The Kid (WI): Did you really say early exit from the playoff?? Are you a moron? How many times have a McNabb lead Eagles team exited early from the playoffs? I know, not many!!! 5 NFC Champs game and one SB. I would not call those early exits Bigbadrookie
Did Les say, "True, that"? Richard Saunders
