Righthander Scott Mathieson was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a muscle strain in his back, the Phillies said.

Mathieson, 26, appeared in two games for the Phillies this year with his last appearance coming Sept. 5 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Phillies claimed righthander Cesar Carrillo off waivers from the San Diego Padres. To make room for Carrillo on the 40-man roster, lefthander Nate Robertson was designated for assignment.

Robertson allowed six runs last night against the Marlins in a game the Phillies led, 10-0.

Carrillo, 26, went 5-14 with a 5.60 ERA in 27 starts for Triple A Portland this season. He also appeared in four games for Olmecas de Tabasco, of the Mexican League.

I give Charley a WORLD of credit for what he DIDN'T do last night. What he didn't do was bash Nate Robertson's head off his shoulders with a baseball bat. I'm not sure I could have been so understanding.

Robertson was designated? What a surprise. (that was sarcasm)

Why do the Phillies bother to get these guys? Nate Robertson? Cesar Carrillo? 5-14 with a 5.60 ERA in AAA! That Cesar the Dog Whisperer guy could probably do as well.

Why do they need some stiff with a 5.60 ERA in Triple A? They'd be better off calling up someone from LHV if they just need an extra bullpen arm. Robertson's fate was sealed by his meltdown last night. Charlie must have almost had a heart attack watching that.

The Cesar Carrillo that pitched 4 games in the Mexican League (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=carril002ces) is not the one we got. We got this one (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=carril001ces)

@kiwi...how much of that salary are the Phillies paying? None. That would be the answer.

Well, if Robertson is making $10 million at least its not the Phillies who are paying it. I imagine that some combination of Detroit and Florida is paying the bulk of his salary, with the Phillies just responsible for the minimum.

According to Baseball America, Carrillo was the Number 1 prospect in the Padres organization a few years back. He had Tommy John Surgery and this is his year to year and a half after surgery. Considering he was signed off waivers and the Phils released Robertson, I say he is worth the risk.

I'd actually like to know why the Charlie didn't use Romero in the 8th inning last night...just to let him try to get some sharpness back. If he's going to help us down the stretch he's got to do better than he has been lately, walking the one lefty hitter he's brought in to face.

Plus, you have to realize that pitchers' stats are always going to be higher in the Pacific Coast League - just like the hitters' stats are inflated...

When they signed Robertson I said he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the pitching rubber at Citizens Bank. Thanks for proving me right, Nate
