SAN DIEGO -- A lot to dissect from a wild 11-inning win Saturday night. We discussed the intentional walk ahead of Ryan Howard earlier, so a few notes here...

There's a very, very good chance Raul Ibanez does not play today. He is 0 for his last 18 and the Padres will start a lefty, Wade LeBlanc. Figure John Mayberry Jr. is in left.

Charlie Manuel was asked about Ibanez (and Jimmy Rollins) before Saturday's game. He said he will stick with both where they currently are, mainly because the Phillies are winning.

"They have to stay with it," Manuel said. "They will. Stay upbeat and keep going. That's one of the beauties of this game."

With a save opportunity available, Jose Contreras did not pitch for the second straight day. In a span of five days (from April 17 to 21), Contreras had thrown 72 pitches in four appearances. He needed some rest. He is, after all, 39 years old. (We think.)

But two days off raised a few eyebrows. Manuel said that is unneccessary.

"Contreras is OK," he said. "He'll be ready to pitch [Sunday]."

Not that Ryan Madson has done anything wrong as closer.

***

How about young Antonio Bastardo? Handed the ninth inning for just the third time in his career, he goes out and strikes out the side -- all swinging. In nine innings he has 14 strikeouts with three hits and four walks.

His fastball touched 95 mph on the final punchout of Chase Headley. Of the 16 pitches he threw, San Diego batters swung and missed at five. Entering Saturday, his 15.5 percent swinging strikes was the highest on the team.

J.C. Romero should be ready to come off the disabled list May 4, but Bastardo may have earned himself those tight spots late in games against lefties that Romero used to inherit.

is blanton just not strong enough to throw a pitch 90 mph?
first time I watch him this year. but I thought he had a better fast ball. at least moyer was lefty and crafty!

Does bastardo always pitch out of the stretch? I never knew he was so electric. Guess he just wasn't ready. He is now!

Antonio has become a lights out guy; no need for J.C. to hurry back...

Madson at times overthrows when he pitches the 9th. Ryan just has to trust his top talent. Scarry that Contreras needs two days rest. If J.C can be the situational lefty then Bastardo can pitch the 7th. Ryan standing closer to the plate should give him better read on outside pitches particularly from lefty. I still would like to see him open his stance and go back into the crouch.

Charlie and Dupree are doing an outstanding job with this bullpen, as far as resting guys at the right time and handing the ball to guys that need their confidence built up. Now Contreras is rested for Doc and Lee if needed. And most important the rest of the pen have had success and are building confidence.

Bastardo is fun to watch, such swagger. I agree with M60, J. C. can take his time.

I think they're being smart resting the older Contreras. That gives them some looks at Madson as closer which helps to give them a read on where they'll be post-Lidge. Bastardo is really impressive. Let's not overlook the fact that both Baez and Kendrick also pitched 1-2-3 innings. I agree with Ron: the bullpen is being used very effectively, not just for the short term wins but to set things up for later in the season.

The stubborness of Charlie over Raul is just absurd now. The guy is now way below the Mendoza line. If Rube could get him a new chance in the AL, I would do it in a heartbeat. A minor league prospect is what they should ask for and hope that an AL team needs a DH who might revive there. He will not hit himself out of this slump. As for Jimmy, his fielding alone keeps him in there but perhaps Charlie should drop him lower. Who knows ? When is Brown coming back? I really do not expect to see Chase until the All Star break. The Pen amazingly surprised all of us and please do not lie. No one expected Danys and Kyle to stop up and The Bastardo is our next Pen star. Who would have thunk it??

I hope Contreras is ok. Madson has pitched as much or more than him lately and after been unable to pitch the other day because of "soreness'' has pitched in back-to-back games... About the Raul situation, what can I say that I haven't said yet concerning the manager?

I'll say this for Charlie's handling of Ibanez: When and if Charlie does strip him of his regular status in LF, he won't be able to claim he wasn't given every chance.

Charlie=loyalty and belief that veterans know how to work through it. Raul is a great guy, but each year his lows get lower. No AL team is going to want him at any price. He's hitting (or should I say, "not hitting") at what, 170? He's ours now and hopefully Chuck will save him from further embarassment by platooning him, at the very least, with Mayberry Jr.
How about Big Joe! At least he's serviceable against the lower tier teams, which is something...

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
