Earlier this week, when the Eagles locked up Brent Celek with a 6-year extension, the team touted how it has 22 players on its current roster signed through 2012 and beyond. Apparently, the Winston Justice and Celek deals pretty much used up all the remaining cap money the Birds have available for that sort of thing this season.

One guy they haven't locked up, though, is plucky wideout Jason Avant, last Sunday's hero and a favorite of teammates and coaches. There have been some preliminary talks, but nothing concrete for the fourth-year wideout, in the final season of his rookie deal.

If there is a new collective-bargaining agreement, Avant becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason, which would be a huge "uh-oh." The Eagles (like much of the league) clearly believe there will be no new agreement this offseason, and unrestricted free agency will go from 4 years served to 6. That would make Avant a restricted free agent for 2010. But given the clutch year he's having, they certainly couldn't tender him at his draft level (fourth round). It's not even clear they could put a second-round tender on him and not risk losing a heart-and-soul guy. (The tender level refers to the draft pick compensation you get if somebody else signs your guy.)

A first-round tender, last offseason, would have meant paying Avant $2.5 million, a second-round tender, $1.8 million.

This might be a tough deal to do, given that DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are going to be ahead of Avant on the pecking order forever. But it probably shapes up as a top offseason priority.

Linebacker Chris Gocong fits into the same free-agency category, by the way, but teams might not be lining up to bid for him.

Get this done. Regardless of his spot on the pecking order, he's found his niche and is one of the best in the league at what he does. Donovan clearly has a ton of trust in him on third down. I love Donovan but we all know he throws a lot of balls low or behind guys and he throws bullets over the middle. We need Avant's hands in those situations.

Avant and Weaver deserves it. My only concern is with too many good receivers, Reid will go back to his all pass all the time philosophy. McNabb, Jackson, Maclin, and Avant will end up with great numbers for next five years, but we will probably not get a SB......

What about Jon Dorenbos? He's a stud LS and he's magical too.

Avant plays special teams well, blocks in the running game, converts third downs (often by going over the middle). One Yard and Maclin are definitely the main guys, but Avant has real value, and I would hate for us to learn that the hard way by watching him go to another squad. Please do not rely on the expected lack of a collective bargaining agreement keeping him a restricted free agent.

Avant has hung in there and has proven worthy of a contract extension. In some ways, he has been underutilized. With Jackson hurt, we should see a healthy dose of him this week.

An extension for Jason is obviously in the Lord's hands. And by "Lord" I mean the Dark Lord of the Sith, Joe Banner.

Resigning Avant would be a good move. He has great hands and has the confidence of the QB. As for Gocong he's not a linebacker. He probably needs to play with his hand int he dirt because watching him in operate in space is nerve wrecking to say the least. It's not a coincidence that TE's have a field day against us every week for the past 2 years. Teams that play us know that he can not cover TE's and to be honest he should be playing to his strengths which is rushing forward instead of back peddling. I think that unless they bring in a good SAM LB for next year they should just move Bradley over to the strong side, Will Witherspoon to the middle and keep Jordan as the weak LB to feild the 3 best LB's on this team.

If they fail to sign Avant, they're saying that hard work and great results are not top priorities. What more could a receiver do than he has done? They need to keep all three long term, but to me Avant is a higher priority than Jackson or Maclin. He isn't just a good blocker, with great hands. The man knows how to get up field after the catch. I see him as a player likely to miss few games, and that should always figure heavily into long-range deals.

Chill, they will sign Avant. The one thing this team does really well is manage the cap and lock up good players for decent wages for a long time.

Avant has proven his worthiness this year and last. Would be great to lock him up.. Gocong should be cast aside like manure. His play has been so horrific this year after showing improvement last year. No need to give him anything but his walking papers. Gocong's stats last week vs, Wash.. 0 tackles and 1 assist in a starting role.. If the Eagles weren't so thin at linebacker , he could have gotten his walking papers on that game alone.

"Linebacker Chris Gocong fits into the same free-agency category, by the way, but teams might not be lining up to bid for him." Understatement of the year. Cocong will never play for another team after the Eagles finally give up on this failed experiment. He's not an NFL-caliber player, but he's a great "character guy."

They really need to lock this guy in to a deal. They get rid of Kevin Curtis and whatever they're paying him to wear sweatsuits on the sideline and give the money to playing, and more deserving reciever. Don't let this guy get away!
