If you take Villanova and Penn and Delaware and Temple, I mean, you have four oustanding college football teams that suffer because of Hollywood, the NFL and the Eagles. So you've got to turn to Page 5 before you get to see anything about college football.

I think the NFL Network, I think the NFL itself is so powerful, that it dwarfs all of us so much. And all of you who were at the game today, this is a great game to watch...

Philadelphia is missing college football. I've been here for 25 years and they're missing out on a great thing. I don't really know what the answer is, but I know a game like this certainly can help it.

- Villanova coach Andy Talley

I'm not a marketing guy, but if you didn't have fun at that game, if you didn't enjoy that, you don't like football. There's alway sgoing to be the skeptics, there's always going to be the naysayers about "Why are you playing that game?"

You play that game for what just happened. It was a hell of a football game, and we made too many mistakes to win the game.

 - Temple coach Al Golden

At the start of the night, I thought Villanova could win the game but that Temple probably would. The Owls had enough of a size advantage on the lines that if they could control the ball, Villanova wouldn't have enough time to pull all the tricks out if its bag.

So much for that. The first half was a bit dull, but the second half was definitely entertaining. I don't think either side's fans could walk away saying they didn't get their money's worth, though I'm sure there will still be plenty of sting felt on North Broad Street this morning.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm bringing back the Spectacle of the Week poll. I should have done it yesterday morning to include the Thursday games, but I didn't have time. You can vote in the poll box over on the right side of the blog.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

I AM SO GLAD I DID NOT DRIVE ALL THE WAY FROM MARYLAND TO SEE THE SAME SOUP WARMED OVER!!! Temple University football is a JOKE!! Year in and year out, they never seem to amaze me how they work so hard to find ways to lose winnable games. Temple needs to get rid of their football program and channel the money in areas of promise like basketball and field hockey. I am done with you losers and trust me, others will follow. Enjoy another dismal season LOSERS!! the Nittany Lions are going to maul the owls, better fall asleep on the highest branch on the tree you nocturnal morons!

I agree Jeff. I was anticapating Temple football this year. I couldn't wait until the season started. After losing to Nova, Im done with Temple. What's sad is the season just started and Im already done with them. They dont deserve my time nor energy. What a letdown!

Can it really be considered an upset if its against Temple though? I mean IT IS Temple. Its not like they are a good team. And also to have a rivalry with someone it helps for both of those teams to actually be good and competitive

"VanillaNova: No Flavor." That's funny, never heard that before. Bottom line - Temple tasted some of that Villanova flavor again, and lost --- AGAIN -- HAHAHAHAHAHA Wait till basketball season for part two . . .

The game was exciting and fun. Even Nova's elite alumni basketball players were in the stands- Randy Foye, Mike Nardi, Scottie Reynolds, Dwayne Anderson, Dante Cunningham just to name a few. GO CATS GO!

Another discouraging loss for the Temple football program. You have to fatten up on your "creampuffs" and build up your record. Temple is in no position to do so, again. Al Golden is in his fourth season and the program has gone from brutally awful to just awful. I believe he is the right guy; however, he will never be able to recruit well enough to make this a viable success. It is a problem that has no solution. Temple football has improved; it will NEVER improve enough.

About 6 months ago the Inquirer ran a story to the affect that Villanova shouldn't play Temple because Temple's program was on the move and out of Villanova's league. Anytime a 1-A plays a 1-AA there is nothing to be gained by the 1-A. If Temple would have beaten Villanova 100-0, would that help its program; if it were 27-24 would that help its program? However, losing 27-24 is disastrous to their program and you can see it in all the comments that have been posted by Temple fans after the game on the blog and here today. It will always be a no win and a horrible lose if the 1-A loses.

About Jonathan Tannenwald
I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

I write primarily about the University of Pennsylvania and the Ivy League, but I also cover the other basketball and football teams across the city from time to time. In the spring, you'll find coverage of the Penn Relays here.

In addition to all of that, I write Philly.com's soccer blog, The Goalkeeper.
