Yards-per-attempt, as it relates to passes thrown against individual cornerbacks, is a pretty esoteric NFL stat; it isn't included in the regular statistical package the league prepares for reporters.

Apparently, along with being dogged by injuries all last season and not having a good year in several more easily quantifiable ways, Lito Sheppard also had a really poor "YPA," because Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie brought it up Monday in his annual "state of the team" address, as Lurie was asked to explain why the  Birds are working toward a new contract with Brian Westbrook but don't seem disposed to do the same for Lito.

Lurie said he couldn't discuss the situation, then did.

"I will say that I’m very hopeful that Lito will have a terrific season, show us, and the league, that he’s back to the old Lito, feels healthy, (that) he’s got great playmaking ability and certainly a lower YPA and just really perform the way that we know Lito can," Lurie said. "I think that’s what he’s going to do.”

Sheppard wasn't pleased. Like most reporters, he was not familiar with the stat, and he said he had no idea how he ranked. Attempts to track down the number Lurie alluded to hadn't succeeded when this was posted. ESPN stats maven K.C. Joyner, one of the stat's chief proponents, ranked the Eagles' duo of Sheppard and Sheldon Brown 17th in YPA last season, at 7.8 yards per attempt.

"I guess he's got to find something bad against me, huh?" Sheppard said after returning to training camp workouts Wednesday from a groin injury. "I'm not hiding. I know what I can do; everybody knows what I can do. If you've got to dig that deep to bring up something to say I can't do good? Hey, that shows how good a player I am. I tip my hat to him for expressing that."

Sheppard said he keeps track of the big plays he gives up and the ones he makes.

"If you want to get down to how many inches I give up a play, so be it," he said. "Guess what? I can play this game and I can play it well."

He said he couldn't recall a coach ever mentioning yards per attempt.

"I don't think so. If they have, I'm sorry for not paying any attention," he said. "I didn't know that was that important in this game."

Sheppard will start at his old left corner spot when the Birds begin their preseason Friday night in Pittsburgh, defensive coordinator Jim Johnson said. Asante Samuel, signed at $57 million to start at left corner, is still sitting out with a hamstring injury.

Afternoon addendum: The respond-to-comment function isn't working for me today, so I'll do it this way: I never said the YPA stat didn't exist or that I didn't understand it. I said I can't locate online a listing that ranks Lito Sheppard last season. The number that one gentleman provides in the comments here doesn't make sense, it's far too low, unless I'm missing something.

Also: I'd love to talk to the people who keep this stat -- K.C. Joyner of ESPN.com or The Football Outsiders -- about how they factor variables. What if a corner constantly matches up with the other team's top deep threat? He might have a high number but be doing a good job. What if a team plays a lot of Cover 2, and the corner is always handing off to a safety deep? How do you assess responsibility in zone schemes, in  general? Don't corners generally have good stats when their d-lines are getting pressure, and poor stats when they don't? Etc.

Evening update: K.C. Joyner, who seems like a very nice man, says Lito's YPA last season was 8.1, which tied him for 62nd in the NFL. Joyner is cognizant of some of the variables involved, but he still feels the stat is an accurate barometer of cornerback performance. I'm less certain, but I'll be watching this season to see how it tracks.

Meanwhile, Westbrook said talks to rework his contract continue and he is "optimistic about the way things have been going." When he reported for camp, Westbrook left open the possibility of not playing in the preseason opener if his deal wasn't done, but Westbrook said Wednesday he will play.

Quarterback Donovan McNabb said he has been in contact with guard Shawn Andrews through text messaging, and McNabb thinks teammates will be extremely supportive when Andrews returns to the team. Andrews has not reported to camp. He told the Daily News this week that he is suffering from depression, but is feeling better and hopes to join teammates after seeing his psychiatrist back home in Arkansas on Thursday.

     Crunch Time

*Donovan McNabb said fade patterns haven't traditionally been a big part of the Eagles' version of the West Coast offense, because it's a timing offense, but McNabb acknowledged what reporters have noted -- the Birds are throwing more fades in this camp, particularly to 6-4 wideout Hank Baskett. McNabb, who is close to Baskett, said the fade is "something we've worked on this offseason together."

*Wideout Reggie Brown left the morning workout with an Achilles' problem.

*Fans in the stands looking out over a field where only the kicking specialists were working made the best of their situation, chanting "Roc-ca, Roc-ca, Roc-ca!" for punter Sav Rocca., and "A-kers, A-kers, A-kers!" for kicker David Akers. But nobody had a shout-out for backup kicker and punter Richmond McGee.

*Sheldon Brown put on the afterburners and flicked away a long pass McNabb targeted for Greg Lewis.

*Baskett caught in stride a laser-like McNabb slant, working against Lito Sheppard.

*Brent Celek suffered a couple of misses that weren't quite drops but could have been catches. We're still awaiting word from the official scorer.

*With the first-team offense working a rare sequence against the first-team defense, McNabb beat all-out blitzes to flick completions to Brian Westbrook and L.J. Smith.

lito should shut up and prove everyone wrong. you can't complain when you miss as much time as he has. drafting kolb for the injured mcnabb was equivalent to signing samuel for the injured lito. we didn't hear mcnabb whine about it. lito: we luv ya and appreciate ya when you're healthy and playing at your best. but this move was the right one. your pride is talking now.

The first parade drew 2.5 million people, a lot more than the Sixers parade drew. About as many as the Phillies.

"it's not a major sport anywhere but in south jersey or northeast philly"......and in Detroit, and Montreal, and Colorado, and New York....as for "no one caring" if they won a Stanley Cup? I know you're only eight years old, and obviously wasn't around to see the parades in the '70's......They were MUCH bigger than the Eagles parade......Oh what? The Eagles never WON a championship or had a parade? Then STFU.

i think it's funny that people are even talking about hockey. hockey is like soccer or lacrosse. it's not a major sport anywhere but in south jersey or northeast philly. if the flyers won the stanley cup, no one would really care, except for the dorks who watch hockey.

I want them to pay Westbrook. As for Lito, he's injury prone, soft, and has gotten by more on rep than anything. He was schooled last year badly by Plaxico Burress, if memory serves me correct, and he does little to nothing against the run. Let him go, just get some decent value in return.

Philly.com worst website ever. Not only is your website slow to load, you take away a right (freedom of speech) that many of us have fought for, in wars, while you fat pieces of slime sit behind your monitor. Cowardice at its finest. Although, you all DID endorse John Street.

Lito needs to improve his GPS(games per season) more than anything else. If he was on the field he might have a better case for a new contract.

and in 2007 champ bailey ranked 56th in ypa and Fred Bennett(who?) of the houston texans ranked #1 so basically the stat that Lurie brought up is a crock of you know what to discredit lito and justify not paying him. i'd like to see what asante samuels ypa was.

Lurie needs to keep his mouth shut. In an already volatile situation Lurie has stoked the fire. Lurie should spend less time admiring his Jerry Jones poster on his wall and try to emulate someone with class and dignity. Just when it looked like this threesome with the d-backs could work Lurie opens up his mouth...........Lurie in the words of Sister Mary Elephant (all due repsect to Cheech and Chong)......Jeff shut up!!!!!!! Thank You.

If Lito wasn't one of the softest players on the Eagles, he would get paid. He hasn't played a full season since 2004 (when he missed the last game like all the other starters saving their health for the playoffs). Funny how he takes exception to Lurie comments when in actuality they are nothing but true. Play hard and tough Lito and you will get paid, but its best to keep you soft mouth shut or you might end up hurting that too

JLAMB what you do with Ed Snider is none of my business...as far as im concerned its football season and no one cares about hockey at this point. Besides, I've never witnessed a championship in Philadelphia as long as I've lived, therefore the Flyers haven't created anything for me...

They will with Hatch on the LTR, until the second half of the season or until the playoffs, clearing his salary. Carts and Jones are enough to get it sone, then do it. Florida needs a #1 Center. And please note, i never said they were going to win this year, but have the best shot of the 4 teams. and the only owner and management who will actually do what it takes to win. 2010 is when i think, we'd be ready to really compete for the cup.

Lito's problem is that he has a much higher regard for his talent than the Eagles or the rest of the league. When teams are only offering a bag of balls, or a 10th round pick (I know I know....that's the joke), then you have some impression issues.

Lito's missed 15 games over the past four years, at one of the least physical positions on the defense.

YPA is a worthless stat - especially when your line can't penetrate and your receiver has 10 seconds to get open. too many other things factor into this (defensive play, double coverage, etc.). also, of course the best CBs in the league are going to have a higher YPA, since they are going up against the best WRs in the league.

Dierte, the Flyers are only the team that created the concept of a championship parade down broad street in this city. And I'll take the Ed Snider as an owner over Lurie any day. At least he understands this fan base.

I was wondering if there is a stat that shows dollars under the cap per year (based upon the final end of year numbers) and if Lurie has been number one 9 years running. Pedal to the medal boys, we are out to win! Just do it without me putting any money out there.

I can't see why Lurie would comment on Lito's performance! All of this coming from some Hollywood-type penny pincher who looked like an idiot trying to get into the fumble drills in training camp. Leave the criticisms of football to the football people you hired. I can't STAND that dude! He makes a team that's only capable of winning seasons, hasn't really commented on anyone's performance( or lack thereof) since he bought the team, and yet here he is, stepping into the realm of his business that he doesn't have any experience in, to single out a player's performance. What the hell does he know, other than what Jim Johnson and Andy tell him? Lito can be greedy for money. Lito could be trying to make himself out to be better than what he is. But when he's healthy, he can pick the ball off, and he's fast enough to take it to the house. Yeah, the injuries and missed games are an issue that he needs to squash with a completely healthy and productive season. Fine, I can give Lurie that. But now he's a stat guy with that crap about YPG? WTF?????

I am more of a Flyers fan, but we are working with 2 stud d-men, 1 broken d-man and 3 average d-men, an average goalie, and moderate speed. Sorry Clarkeisgod, that just won't cut it this year. PS - they don't have the cap money for J-Bo even if they trade 3 forwards.

Typical Eagles spin regarding Lito. But then again, they WERE the team that allegedly floated the rumor that Donte Stallworth had violated the league's drug policy in an effort to lower his market price when they were interested in re-signing him. It's all good though, Lurie said McNabb is the best quarterback in the NFC (even better than Brees and Romo) and Hank Baskett is going to catch 14 fade pass touchdowns this year. We're all set.

Flyers Stink???? they have the BEST chance, which i guess isn't saying anything, of the 4 teams to win. Especially after we trade for J-Bo, the Blue line will cover up are second rate goalie flaws. Totally on board for the Birds, but you can see this train wreck coming a mile away.

I think the point of Lurie was saying is, nobody else in the league wants Lito because he can't stay health. So stay health so you can get traded for something during the season or after. Like a #1 pick.....which ofcourse the Eagles will trade away with the other two 1st round picks and probably own the whole 3rd round.

While I am not saying Lurie's Stat holds water, you guys obviously did not search hard to find the stat as I put Yards-per-attempt, cornerbacks in google and bunch of hits came up even a few that explained it.
