Kolb supports Vick

POSTED: Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 12:25 PM

Michael Vick has more than just the support of the Philadelphia Eagles front office.

He has the team's starting quarterback by his side.

Kevin Kolb and Vick, fast friends since the Eagles acquired the former Falcons quarterback last August, have been texting back and forth since the June 25th shooting that occurred outside a Virginia Beach nightclub that was hosting the backup quarterback's birthday bash.

Kolb's words:

"I just told him that it was unfortunate what he had to go through," the Eagles' new starting QB said recently. "I just said, ‘If there’s anything I can do, whatever is I don’t care, just holler.’ And, of course, he said, ‘I appreciate it.’”

Vick is not a suspect in the shooting that maimed a codefendant in the dogfighting case that landed the quarterback in federal prison for 18 months. He has maintained his innocence and has said that he had no prior knowledge before Quan Phillips was shot in the leg.

Virginia Beach police have identified the shooter but have been unable to press charges because they say the victim and several witness have been uncooperative.

The owner of the nightclub has said that video surveillance showed Vick leaving the nightclub four minutes prior to the shooting. The lead prosecutor in the case said that Vick was involved in a "confrontation" earlier at the party. An Eagles source labeled the prosecutor's description of the incident as a "mischaracterization."

Some members of the media and some fans have called for the Eagles to release Vick. Team sources have said that Vick will remain with the team unless something new or revelatory comes out. The NFL is conducting its own investigation.

“I think people misunderstand Michael a little bit," Kolb said. "They don’t understand how good of a guy he is. But I think [Eagles players and coaches] all see that. I just hate – and this is what he’s upset about – that he got his name [dragged] back through the mud. For an outsider looking in … they don’t even know what the story is. They’re just seeing something negative with his name and it looks bad.”

When Vick joined the Eagles a year ago he became the No. 3 quarterback behind Donovan McNabb and Kolb. He was sure not to ruffle Kolb's standing on the team even though he was often on the active game day roster while Kolb, the emergency third quarterback, was not.

With McNabb gone, Vick is now the backup to Kolb. The pair spent much of the off-season working out and practicing together. They were also frequent partners on the golf course.

“He’s one of my better friends on the team," Kolb said. "I love him.”

Vick violated his probation...and will be sent back to prison. Jeffrey Lurie said Vick's actions in killing and hanging helpless dogs was horrific and dispicable and there is ZERO TOLENANCE for Vick....Jeffrey Lurie must keep his pledge and FIRE VICK.

The media is putting Vick's teammates on the hot seat by asking them about Vick..what do you expect them to say that Vick is a scum bag physcho that enjoys killing helpless dogs with his own bare hands?

Bill20 -- kolb isnt being put on the hot seat if he says that he loves vick and that they often play golf together. they are obviously friends off the field too.

Bill20 - will you shut up? Every single story with Vick's name in it has you as the first person to comment. You say the say thing, over and over again, and honestly, no one really cares what you think. Get a life buddy, because your opinion doesn't matter at all.

Please cut Vick, so that I can watch the Eagles without feeling sick. He added nothing to the team except a huge distractions and then they gave him a raise. It is ridiculous.

Please. What else can he say? Even if he hated Vick he'd have to say this. The only reason for Kolb to like Vick is that with Vick as his backup, the coaches are going to give Kolb plenty of time to make mistakes...

@phil: I have no problem with Kolb's statement. The purpose of the restrictions that Vick accepts as part of his probation is to keep him from knowingly associating with people that were part of his criminal past. The purpose of Goodells restrictions were basically the same, and the Eagles expectations similar. I am not a big Vick fan ( don't think he's all that great a football player), and I probably wouldn't have signed him, but since they did they at least owe it to him to be honorable about the type of things that would be considered violations. The Quanis jerk showing up at a party where he knew he wasn't welcome solely for the purpose of screwing up the guy (after he had already been part of ruining the guy's life once), doesn't qualify. If the feds thought Vick did anything wrong that night, he'd already be in jail. I think the Eagles and the NFL are doing the right thing here, even if it would make a more spectacular story to ban or release him.

Get ready to watch the upcoming season imploded. Kolb will be a bust, and Vick will be released.

Team Vick has already repeatedly lied to the public about where and when he was that night. He also waited until 2am last Sunday morning to cancel his golf tournament. He did not find out he couldn't go at 2am. He just doesn't care about anyone else and thinks he's above everyone. And, he can't play football. We want this guy why?

@joshmoneyman: Kolb passes the '26-27-60' test. No chance he's a bust.

Bill20, you can keep saying that Vick violated his probation...but that won't make it true. Sucks for you doesn't it? What are you gonna do? Sue the DOJ that they wont listen to your insanity? LOL
